No. 1V .223 ammo suggestions

I'm going to be picking up a 1985 vintage No. 1H in .223, and am looking for some commercial ammo suggestions. I am a reloader, and reload for multiple handgun and rifle calibers, I just don't want to add another caliber at this time. It will primarily be used at the range, and as a casual long range plinker; I'm not a hunter. Please let me know if there are any factory loads that you've had good luck with.

Best regards,

Thanks! Does your .223 have a 1 in 12" twist, or a newer 1 in 8" twist bbl?

Best regards,

I'm guessing that a 1985 vintage rifle is a 1:12" twist. Bullets of less than 60gr will be optimal. I reload for my 12" twist rifles using 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tips or Hornady 55gr SP bullets. Factory equivalents include Federal Premium Ballistic Tip ( buy $90 worth and get a $64 Cub Bear knife free) and Power Shok soft points. Years ago I stocked up on Remington 50gr JHP loads in 40ct boxes when I found it on sale. Great shooting and accurate from my Rem 700 SPS Varmint .223 rifle. I also used to enjoy a Winchester white box load for short range play inside 200yds. It was a 45gr JHP and came in 40 or 50ct boxes. If either of those are still available they should be just what you want.

Yes, I'm assuming it's 1 in 12". Thanks for the suggestions, and the tip on the Federal promotion!

Best regards,
I think it's something like Federal's "Bulls, Bucks, and Blades" promo. I bought a box of Nosler Partitions for my .270, a couple of boxes of the .223 Ballistic Tips, and a couple boxes of Vital Shok 12ga Tru Ball slugs. I'm eagerly waiting for the USA manufactured Knives of Alaska Cub Bear to arrive!

I just saw the new post to this thread and realized that I never posted a picture of my No.1-V. I also noticed that I mis-identified which model I have; obviously a 1-V, not a 1-H. Anyway, here are a couple of pictures, with the 6.5-20X Weaver in Leupold rings that I added.

Best regards,

The only factory .223 I've ever shot for anything accuracy related was Hornady Frontier 55gr. It was accurate enough for a 194 (184 with crossfire) offhand at 200 in a highpower match. That is a beautiful rifle.
