No. 1 45-70 question.

Have a No. 1 45-70 rifle I aways assumed was a Sporter. My friend stopped by and noticed it in my safe. He was surprised I owned this rifle. He is an old dyed in the wool Ruger man. He told me it was a No.1 Tropical. Really do not think it is but would appreciate someone confirming it. The serial number is not in the range of what is shown on line. How can one be sure?

If itis the tropical in 45/70 it is relatively rare.

Easiest way to tell - measure the barrel. Tropicals (i.e. 1H) in 45-70 are 24" long with a "D" weight barrel- same as the 458 Mag.

The 1S in 45-70 is 22"

Just to confuse things, a recent special run of around 250 rifles in 45-70 was made with 26" "C" weight barrels (same as the 1H 375 H&H).

Not "relatively" rare.
Ultra rare! Best guess, between 12 and 20 made.
