Ruger #3 scope dilemma.

I have a near mint #3 (Bicentennial year edition) in .22 Hornet. I put the only bases I could find for it - Weaver - and I mounted a Leupold extra light compact Vari-X II, 3-9X scope on it because of the Adjustable Objective feature. I want to be able to hunt little critters up close in the woods. My problem: eye relief. I changed the bases to an extended base, but still can't get the eye relief needed. The tube length on the scope appears very short. Am willing to get another quality scope for it, but are there any better mount/ring combinations out there? The scope looks very nicely proportioned on the gun. I'm considering a Monarch 3-12X w/side focus, but that's a big scope on such a small gun/caliber combination. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I posted a similar pic under the 'stainless No. 1' thread but here's mine with a Nikon Omega. This is the BDC model which is calibrated for muzzleloading projectiles but I'm replacing it with a black Omega with the regular duplex reticle instead. These scopes are awesome, 5" of eye relief which is perfect for the No. 1.

a14jd, my mistake. Meant to say extended rings, not extended bases. They are made by Kwiksite, and they fit Weaver bases (mounts), which are what I have on it (being that there is no Ruger rib type mount on a #3). They are not working out due to the fact that the extension part is too thick, and the rings are too low, so the bell of the scope touches at the point where the rings mounts attach to the bases. Translation, in a low ring situation, it's not accomplishing what it's supposed to. But a higher ring mount situation would put one's face too high up off the stock. A longer eye relief, as suggested for the scopes mentioned by Kingstrider and Amigo Will (thanks for the suggestions guys) might be just the ticket. Fatercat, I'm trying not to resort to cutting the stock - it would reduce the value of the 200th year #3 for sure, not that I'm looking to sell it. And, the gun is pristine. It would be a shame to do that to the gun. Thanks for the inputs, fellas. I think a change of scopes is in order. Need a longer eye relief than what I am getting now. Paladin43

Try the leupold VXII 2-7x33 or the nikon omega 5" or prostaff 2-7, or the redfield 2x7x33.

Good luck

Scope on No. 3

Have had good luck with the older Weaver scopes and the Burris "mini" scopes on the No. 3's. Either will work with low rings on the Weaver bases, which helps with the relatively low comb on the stock.

The Weavers have both long eye relief and quite a bit of tube length. The Burris "mini" scopes (now "Timberline") appear to trade off field of view for extra eye relief, but work OK.

Currently have a Pentax 4-12x (actually a Burris 4-12 mini) on my .30-40. Functions well and looks nice on the streamlined rifle.

Go wtih RUGER #3 bases, available from Brownells for about $14 and Ruger Extended Rings for any eye relief problems.

About a year ago, I put an Omega 1.75 -5 on my 1A and it has worked out great.

I don't have scope on a #3 but,

First off let me start by saying that IMO don't go cutting the stock on your #3. That could be regrettable.

The really short tube length of the compact model Leupold is making a big difference in your ability to get the right eye relief.

IE: My #1-RSI wears a regular VX-II 3-9x40 and I'm only using an extended ring on the rear base which gives me perfect eye relief while wearing thick clothing for cold temperatures. It wouldn't be needed at all during warm temps.
A different scope but, my #1-H wears a regular VX-II 2-7X33 that requires no extended rings at all, even while wearing thick clothing. (I like the combination so well, I'm putting another one of these on my #1-S when it arrives.)

FYI: I just received my Ruger bases for my #3 from Brownell's; they were $18.98 plus $5.35 1st class postage for a total of $24.33.

Wow! Just saw that this was dug-up from past spring! I can only hope that the OP didn't go and chop his stock.

I have aleupold 2x7 vx-2 on my #3. It has weaver bases and weaver extended rings.

They make extended high rings for those mounts now.

Ebay/gunbroker...

Check out the older Leupold M4 and M3's. The M3's will fetch a high price, but the M4's can be hand for under $100 in good condition and will offer you good eye relief.

The good thing about there scopes? You can pick them up cheap, send them back to Leupold and have them gone over for free and you'll have a nice scope that fits the bill. Keep an eye on the length of the scopes. There are several models that have the shorter tube and will put you in the same position you're in right now.

You will not get an AO M4 or M3, but you will get a scope that looks right at home ontop of a No. 1 or 3.....
