Factory seconds??

Was in a shop this week and saw a couple #1 rifles tagged as "factory second." ??? The shop claimed there was some minor thing wrong that "QC" had kicked out, but that none of them could see what.

I called Ruger and they said, "Uhh, what? I've never heard of that."

Thoughts?

Maybe those are the ones that the new hires built while their trainers were on break

Ruger "seconds" usually refer to a gun with some minor cosmetic flaw, or possibly one that was used at a trade show, etc. There's nothing wrong with them and Ruger would not let any gun leave the factory knowingly with any sort of mechanical issue.

Or it could mean used but they cleaned em up really good and they have so little wear they are trying to get near new prices for them.

Or it could mean bubba dropped it off the truck and either dinged up the finish and they don't want to have to send it back for repair so they just took $10 off the price.

If it was a trade show piece it might actually be nicer..... I took in on trade one time a really nice old model Vaquero, and it had a special "U" prefix in front of the serial number. I was told that it was a trade show demo, and as such they were usually built with a slightly higher degree of fit and finish, so as to be represenative of the company. Well, mine is one of the prettiest revolvers I've ever seen, its fit and finish is superb !

There's a program of wholesale distributor returns that are sold as "factory seconds".

So basically if something gets returned to Davidson's, Lipsey's, etc, if they're mechanically sound but had a returnable flaw, they go back out to a dealer shelf, usually marked down to the dealer, but often not marked as such to the consumer. Lipsey's policy on that is that they're no longer returnable, BUT, the good news is, they're Rugers, and Ruger has a generous customer service policy. It's a program that protects the wholesale distributors against some inventory risk through warranty returns, and ultimately, it doesn't really hurt the consumers at all.

I'm sorry, you're probably unaware that there was some sort of technical glitch when you posted the pictures of the pretty revolver.

I've been hunting, but stopped in on my way back. Now most are listed as "pre-owned," but a couple are still listed as factory seconds.

They claim to have a rather wide range of chamberings available, so my guess is they're either distributor returns or closeouts (the 'seconds'), or maybe possibly perhaps something else actually from Ruger. Again, only referring to the 'seconds' here.

Amusingly, the store has a used gun values book very near by, and their tagged prices are above even the "NIB" values listed in the book.

The wood on all of them is extremely plain, and one that I handled I found a gouge in the barrel, but it was still blue. So, I couldn't decide whether that was a factory gouge prior to bluing, or cold-blued over, or just didn't remove the bluing.

On second thought, I suppose that returns to the distributor would properly be labeled as used or 'pre-owned,' so maybe that's it(?)

Factory Seconds? I think that only applies to clothes sold at clearance stores, with uneven stitches.....

I've heard of "factory blem" guns, or "demo guns", from many manufacturers.

I love Ruger, they're my favorite and pretty much only brand now, but I have to say, given the cosmetics of some of the NIB ones I recently bought, I don't know what they would call a "second"
