458 Lott Ammunition question? … May not be the right place, any help appreciated.

Hornady's 500 grn. $100 apx
Nosler's & Federal Cape Shock $200 apx

Regardless of Monolithic Solids, Softpoint, etc … Can anyone shed light on why such a price discrepancy between Manufactures.?

Addl: Regarding recoil. Has anyone shot DT's 300 grn's at 7300 ft/lbs? As there's 700 grn ammo available at 13, 1400 fps. Bottom Line, Is the ft/lbs that creates the Recoil?

Thank You?

well, low volume production tends to make the production expensive. but i can't figure for the life of me why the safari calibers are so much more expensive than other calibers. i understand the volume for a manufacturer is low, but i don't think the component cost for them is more than perhaps 3x the component cost of their high volume runners. so why is safari ammo not just 3x more than the high volume ammo but 5x to 6x more??? beats me. i guess that just must be what the market will bear.

i would say, in the safari calibers for sure, it pays big time to reload.....

458 Lott

I am actually looking for someone to help me with building (sort of) a #1 in 458 Lott. It doesn't need to be very fancy but I do have some specific wants like barrel length, break, and trigger. I want some hard medicine for the pigs and black bears, and the occasional demonic fox squirrel. I am in the process now of acquiring a used #1 (I have never owned one) and I know very little about them although I have experience with bolts and semi's. Anyone have any advice on what I should/should not look for or a good smith to assist me with this? I live in SE North Carolina BTW.

I would suggest Mark Penrod of Penrod Precision. He did my custom #1 and is considered by many (probably all people like me who have given him money and been happy with the results) as the top #1 gunsmith. He is in North Manchester Indiana, but if you are looking at having something worked on by a "specialist" you probably already factored in having to mail it out. I would suggest giving him a call and seeing what he can do for you.
