I have the opportunity to purchase a used New Model Super Blackhawk Hunter 44mag, made in June of 1993. I have a book I forget what it's called that says the value is anywhere from $350-$450, but the person is asking $500. Does anyone know of any other books or sites I could use to find out the value, before I meet up with this guy and make an offer?
I will be meeting him this weekend, and from the photos it looks to be in excellent condition. You can tell it was well taken care of. I haven't seen it in person yet, but it seems like the $500 is a little high. Anyone have any resources or know of any place to get a good blue book?
Also, the Old Models with the 3 screws, didn't come in the 'Hunter' version did they? The Hunter model didn't come out until the New Model in the 90's, correct??
ntomsw if you look on the web at gunbroker they've got them listed at $479 actual price on up to "Buy Now Price" at $650 with staring bid at $300 right now. The one at $479 that's in Georgia looks in pretty nice condition. I'd also look on gunsamerica web site and check thier prices. Remember they can ask the price of the moon but that does'nt mean they'll get it. The price can sometimes be way to high but like anything else for sale "it's buyer beware". The final price all depends on how bad you may want the particular firearm your looking at and what your willing to pay and how bad the seller wants to unload/sell his gun and if he is willing to let it go for a lower price. Good luck, sounds like a nice gun....... decisions, decision.

Since the Hunter models are stainless and there were no stainless OM's... The Hunter first came out in 1992 and was made until 1994. It was reintroduced in 2001. Prices sam to have been creeping up the last couple years so $500 is actually pretty reasonable. I wouldn't put too much faith into the Blue Book. Go with actual current real-world prices. Check GunBroker or Auction Arms and look at the completed auctions. I know the last few I've seen were darn nice shape and all tagged and sold for over $500. The box might add a very slight bonus in terms of value but it's certainly not a collectable model which having the box adds a lot. Rings...well, they came with it originally but they too are so numerous and obtainable, they're not a big dollar addition either way.
Ahhh, good info. Thank you. We;re there any issues with the first run of them then? I have only bought 1 other used firearm before. Just wondering if a 44mag from 19 yrs ago is still solid.
I would post photos here but have no idea how. The gun is nice, and after inspection this weekend, I will probably buy it. I was just curious. It is my first 44mag. I have a Vaquero New Model in 357mag.
I will have to send it out to my gunsmith though, and have them take the owners' manual off the side of the barrel haha
Great looking gun and a fair price IMHO. I wouldn't worry about how much or how little this gun has been shot. It's a Ruger.... It can take it lol. In all seriousness, I'm looking for this very same gun in New Orleans and if I found this gun down here I'd be at the range with it!
There's plenty of .44 mags a lot older than are still solid. Just so you know, the deer or any other game animal won't even notice the barrel warning. I'd spend that money on a GOOD action job and then go with a GOOD optic.
It will mostly be a range toy. I just love Ruger single actions, and will do little to no hunting with it. I just liked the looks of it and wanted to add it to the collection.
I paid $499 for a lightly used Bisley Hunter w/ papers, box and rings last October. A set of stainless rings will set you back about $50 so I'd offer the seller $450.
From looking at your pics i cant see much of a "cylinder ring" on the cylinder from it being cycled. It doesnt take long for these rings to apear, so in my opinion this gun prbly wasnt fired extensively so being 19 years old would not bother me a bit.
These are pretty stout, well made revolvers and should last for a very long time even being shot on a regular basis. I believe 500.00 is reasonable for it. I have a couple sets of these rings in the safe, if you are interested let me know, i would part with a set to help ya out.
I have one, identical to the photo. I put a Millet red dot sight on it. I chose the Millet because the gun came with 1" rings and the Millet is a 1" sight. I like the red dot for several reasons; there is no parallax, where the red dot is, is where the bullet hits, you can shoot with both eyes open and it seems as if you see the dot with both eyes, and target acquisition is almost instant..........Robin
