New Bisley Blackhawk with issues (lots of them)

Hello,

I am new to the forum and new to Ruger single actions. I just received a new Blackhawk bisley 3.75 45colt/45acp today. I for whatever reason did not notice these issues at my FFL, but when I got home...holy smokes.

There overall finish of this firearm is poor. Inconsistent brushing of the ss. The frame window has a large 1 inch burr on the recoil shield on the left side. The grip frame has deep scratches and light scuffs. The ERH juts out past the frame. And the worst of it? The loading gate has a very large gouge near/on the hinge. I have contacted Ruger, but I don’t know why they will do or say about it. Have I received a lemon? I cannot find pictures that come close to this bad online. Thanks for any help! I look forward to being apart of this forum. -Josh

I don't know about now, but I think Ruger's motto used to be "Caveat Emptor", (let the buyer beware). I'm sure they didn't mean for it to apply to their own products, but dayyuuum ! That loading gate is terrible ! Ejector rod housing is pretty funky too. I believe I would be wanting a new one.

Thanks for posting those pics, it lets the rest of us be more aware if we're buying new.

Hey thanks for the input guys. I emailed them yesterday and I will also be calling them today. If for whatever reason Ruger neglects to fix or replace the gun, do you think someone like Bowen could make the gun right? It will probably cost me at least another gun in cash though.

Too bad re; that poor quality Ruger. I've seen numerous posts about lack of QA/QC at not only Ruger, but also S&W, Colt, etc., over the last couple years . A buyer needs to be knowledgeable and very observant before accepting a new gun; an unfortunate sign of the times:( Don't give Ruger a "pass" on this one. Send it back and request a replacement ( then hope for the best). BTW, welcome from North Dakota :)

As if the other brands are better. Go to the S&W forums before you get disappointed by the current state of low cost firearms manufacturing.

If you want better cosmetics pay for it. What's ridiculous is that you haven't even fired it yet but you're threatening never to buy another Ruger....

I sorta agree with P89DC on this. I recently bought a Single Six in stainless. New from on line purchase. The grips were "askew" on the fit to the grip frame. I used a file and did a trim job, all is well. Plus it had a couple small burs on trigger guard. Again a amall file and life is good. This gun is one of 4 Rugers that I own and it is my most fun to shoot gun. Just my thoughts, don't eat me alive.

P89 funny you mention s&w, both my 642 and 627 arrived perfect.

Old Deere, I would love for the issue to be misfit grips. But filing and trimming is not going to fill in the gouge on the loading gate. Heck I’d even be willing to accept the other cosmetic issues, but that loading gate is a disgrace to Ruger.

At this point I’m actually going to hold on a return and send it back to Ruger and see what they do. If they can exchange it for an acceptable gun, I’m willing to forget the experience. I’ve seen enough photographs of the exact same gun online to see that they do not typically look this bad. In fact, every example I saw online looked stellar.

I have absolutely no inside information here but I would assume an actual swap or exchange from the factory would be a last resort once a person has actually taken possession , I assume they always try to repair first, all repairs I have seen have been stellar and again I would say don't worry they have a reputation for making things correct one way or the other. I hope yours returns satisfactory.

I believe that as much as we don't want it to happen there is always a percentage of issues with anything mass produced, unfortunately its the world we live in.
For what it's worth I personally had a smith mtn gun come in worse shape that yours and just last month a friend of mine had his new smith custom shop revolver basically fall apart in his hands so it does happen else where as well

I think it takes a bit of talent on the polishing belt to get the finish we want and to keep everything even and smooth. Maybe someone was new or filling in for another sick or on vacation. It's an expensive problem.

What do you do with all the ones that don't turn out quite right?

Apparently, you sell them anyway.

I just don't like to order new anymore. I feel I do better on the used market.

I am sorry to see an 0818 in that condition. I really wanted one of those for a long time but wanted to buy one locally where I could look it over first (for just such reasons as your experience).

I look at most Ruger revolvers as base guns to build on, but a file hack like that near the gate is abominable.

I'll 2nd that!

I will say that Ruger's quality control is out of control, as are many other gun
manufacturers.

I also don't buy into the idea that its OK for a 700.00 handgun to arrive at a dealer in that condition. That is never acceptable.

I bought dozens of new guns in the 70's and 80's and the only reason to ask to see another gun was to pick the one with nicer wood.

Sorry to hear you got a bad example.:(
I have the same gun but w/5.5 barrel. I love it. No issues, nice fit & finish. Shoots wonderfully w/both cylinders/calibers.

I have purchased over a half dozen new Ruger SS revolvers in the last 2-3 years.
No issues w/fit & finish.

Did have 1 issue (ftf) w/one of my Redhawks. It took 2 trips back to Ruger, but they made it right. I bought 3 more SS guns after that. No issues.

I wouldn't be scared of buying another SS revolver from Ruger at all.
Matter of fact, a DAO SP101 in 357, may be coming home shortly.:D

I probably shouldn’t get in this discussion because I’m trying to look at the pictures on a phone. Go ahead and call me a Ruger Fan Boy, but I don’t see what all of the fuss is about. Does the gun function properly, is accuracy OK. A Ruger revolver is a tool. ( I bought a hammer from ACE Hardware about 20 years ago that fit and finish was poor, had scratches all over it, but man would that thing drive a nail). A Ruger is great buy, for 700 bucks Ruger cannot finish every gun as though it’s a custom build, so Ruger does the most cost effective thing and brings the few back in at no cost for a semi custom work over for the customers that are anal about that sort of thing.

I had a SRH with such a nasty finish as well. It was purchased during the previous presidency when supply was scarce. I just decided to shoot it and it quickly became one of my favorites.

Just shoot it for now, just to make sure there are no other issues. After that, send back to SR to have them address the issues. I'm very sure they will take care of you.

I wouldn’t hold back from buying another Ruger SA. I just bought a new vaquero SS, I just took another look (which I didn’t mind doing) at it, can’t really find a single fault/issue. My Blackhawk is about 4 years old and I don’t see any glaring faults. Did you really look over your purchase before exchanging money? I’m not saying it’s okay for Ruger to let it out it’s door, but things happen.
