Well you never told us what the purpose would be but unless you were one of those that worrys about ammo interchangeablity in a SHTF senario, I'd say go for the big bore. With the reloading ability you can mix up some loads that are a ball of fun without the muzzle blast of the .357 if it was to be strictly a range gun or really work up some "blue whistlers" if you wanted. 5.5 is a great all around bbl length but you might as well see which ballences best for you before you buy because your the only one that has to like it! Good luck, jealous.
I'd be using the Blackhawk at a range for target practice and plinking in the woods or desert. I might take it of the sate on trips. I live in California, so you know that I am very restricted where I use it here. My brother just ordered a Blackhawk 45 colt with the 4.62 inch barrel.
Carrying on an upcoming trip to Alaska, I'd pack the GP 100 and a large bear spray canister. I realize if I have a problem with a grizzly that the spray better work. If it doesn't work my brother, who I'll be traveling with, can use his Blackhawk.
I new to reloading; I have to build my reloading bench and then I'm ready to start.
45 Colt in. The length of your choice. I have a 7 1/2" Bisley and love it. I'm kinda partial to shorter barrels and have thoughts of cuttin' it back to 5.5" as a quasi Keith No. 5
I have both the 45 convertable and the 357 both in the 4 5/8" depending on what you are going to use the gun for the 357 gives you more choice of ammo. and would be a little cheaper to shoot unless you reload
I'd say .... make up your own mind . Since you reload, both are valid choices. How you intend to use it, what you can afford, how much you are going to shoot it ... those are questions only you can answer.
I bought the vaquero in 44 spl because I thought I wanted the shorter barrel, 3.75. Now that I have it, and have blackhawks in the 4.62 I am not sure if I wanted the blackhawk 44 spl instead.
They both fit well into the el paso holster, the BH sticks out a little, not enough to worry about (sights dont come out)
I have no need for them, so no justifcation. But I am still thinking about getting the Blackhawk to go wih it.
The .357 convertible allows for .357, .38spl, 9mm. Right now 9mm is the cheapest centerfire ammo available. Just something to consider.
