Here's some pics. The first one shows the difference in width; Ajax vs stock Ruger grips. The remainder show what's possible if your make you own. A roughed out blank, the same with the outline of the lock, smoked to get the impression and the locating pin drilled, and the last of a finished pair from a piece of burl walnut. Not too difficult and I got a lot of suggestions from CaryC, the custom grip maker on how to do the machining. A belt sander and a drill press are all that you really need. For me, I drill the hole first, then fit the 90 degree angle, then sand and file to the contour. Making your own, you can make 'em as fat or skinny as you like. The stock escutcheons are available from Brownell's. Regards, Rodfac

Nice pictures of Ajax grips on this thread. Unfortunately they are no longer in business. They have closed down. You can still find them new at the gun shows and on the internet but the company no longer exists. I went looking for some grips with more girth for my NM Vaquero and found these at the DFW gun show. They were being sold by Kelly Grips and the lady said they were made by someone in Indiana. They provide a larger grip for the NM Vaquero/50th Anniversary Model guns and are very comfortable.

I like the early varnished original Rugers, much lighter in color, better grain in the walnut. 1960 Blackhawk Flattop here...but the Claro Grips Simms65 posted are very, very nice...

On my NM SBH I just replaced the checkered Altamont grips that I had with some mesquite burl smooth grips by Texas Grips, bought from Mike56 on here. The checkered grips are not comfortable to me on a .44 with full power loads. I think I'm gonna like these better.

Stags. You can get them made as thick or thin as you like. Sack Peterson or Patrick Grashorn.[IMG][/IMG]
