Mini 14 find

So I'm cruising Armslist, and there is a Mini 14 tactical, 5.56, unfired listed for I think $600. I didn't need a new gun, so I left it alone, seemed a good deal, wouldn't last long. Enter the really soft used (and new) gun market. It was down to $525 yesterday. I ended up with it at $450 and $50 of 38 special ammo I didn't like (who wants to shoot a 38 when the barrel says 357?). Luckily the wife didn't use it on me, but I explained that at about $400 less than I could leave a store with one, I'll call it an investment for when the market strengthens.

Cleaned everything this morning. The serial is a 580- and looks to have shipped in 2009. Barely any marks in the bluing on the bolt and stuff from the few times it was cycled by hand. Little bit of carbon at the gas block from the factory fired round (I'm guessing), everything else internally was clean (and dry). Outside had cobwebs. Guy said it had just been sitting in the corner. He'd lost the manual and extra mag but had the factory rings, good thing we have the internet to find or buy such stuff.

Hope to hit the range Friday, test it out and determine if I got lucky. Now I need to stop cruising the classifieds.

That was a great deal, Spiff. That's what I ended up paying for all of my barely used Mini-30's, although I've put more $$$ into them to get them where I like them.
As far as Mini-14's go, you got the best version so far. enjoy.

Well good news and bad news about the Mini 14. The good news is that it was a good shooter. It liked American Eagle 55 grain and really liked Federal Fusion 62 grain (probably 1-1.5" at 50 yards with a BogPod tripod). Consistently hits the steel torso silhouette at 300 yards at the range.

The bad news, I didn't really need the rifle, now I've got one less space in my cabinet. Since I don't need two intermediate range 223s, I'm thinking I'll sell or trade my GSR 223 and get something in 308.

Need?? Need?? Like RJF, I don't understand the term. Like Sandog, I don't let 'need' dictate what I do.

Look around and you'll see that no one 'needs' most of what they own; they want it so they have it.

I wanted my Mini to be like it's big brother, my M1A so I made it into a Mini M14. Need had nothing to do with it.

This is the correct answer, when you have two of something, it's time to customize them into something different, maybe make a GB-F clone or a mini Garand.

or trade one off for a mini in 7.62x39 or .300bo...

More minis....

See I was thinking more trade the GSR 223 off for a 308.

Nice score on the Mini!

The only time "need" gets mentioned when talking firearms is:
I need more ammo.
I need more storage space.
I need more time to hit the range.

Unfortunately my wife's rule is that it all has to fit in my existing cabinet. I'm really wanting a 308, probably a GSR 308 so that I can reach out farther. I'm pretty sure from lack of dust that I was hitting the 600 yard gong at my range last time I had my scout out, but 223 has so little steam at that range that you can't see movement or hear the gong at the range. I've listed my GSR 223/5.56 for sale at a fair price, but figure I've got two options: it sells and I get a 308 and I'm happy, or it doesn't sell and I keep my 223 and I still have a good bolt rifle.

Simple approach is to modify your cabinet so it will hold more.

Win, Win, Win!!
