Tandemkross Eagle Talon Extractor

Gentlemen:
Going to replace the extractors on my Mark l and Mark IV target with the Tandemkross Eagle Talon model. Is the extractor the same one for all Mark l thru IV pistols or are they specific to each model? Thanks

MJ,

Yes, the extractors are the same for all of the Mk series! My new MkIV's had some extraction issues till I replaced the poorly stamped OEM's with the TK's! However, although they worked okay, I found too much variance in the TK machining precision of both the extractors and firing pins. Tried the VQ units and since, I've been pleased with the higher precision, fit and performances of the VQ extractors and firing pins. Now have 2 MkIV's and a Mk2 outfitted with the the VQ units!

FWIW and that all said, I decided to try Dennis' extractor design from SGW and discovered a step up from even the VQ 's in precision build and function. Have these installed in my Mk1 Target and Standard!!

I haven't tried the TK extractor, but I've read of some requiring fitting to make them function correctly. Others have just dropped them in and they worked fine.

Of the brands I've tried, my preference from best to worst is:

1) Power Custom. These work the best and last the longest. At least 15k rounds.
2) Volquartsen. Pretty good and normally last at least 12k rounds. (I had one break a little before 3k rounds.)
3) Kidd. I like the older style fine. The newer ones seem tapered at the hook a bit too aggressively for my taste. New ones normally last around 10k rounds.
4) Tactical Solutions. These are the ones sold by SGW. I bought one from him and put it in my MKII bolt. It wouldn't hold a round at all. I tried fitting it so it would, but it ended up in the trash without firing a single round. Later on, while working on light strikes, I found my headspace was well over SAAMI spec. It turned out the bolt face from the extractor down was under milled. Once the bolt face was squared and headspace reduced to .045", the light strikes dropped to "normal".

So in all fairness to TacSol, my bolt face was the likely cause of the extractor's inability to function. But I haven't bought another one to try, since I have several spare VQs on hand.

Power Custom was the first company to make aftermarket extractors for 10/22s and MK series pistols (identical parts). I always kept a dozen or so in stock and replaced about 100 per year in customer owned guns. Power Custom extractors are machined parts …. not stamped parts like Ruger uses. I still recommend Power Custom Sharp Claw extractors …. they have never let me down. I have used a few Volquartsen Exact Edge extractors. They worked much better than the factory extractors but not as good as Power Custom Sharp Claws. I never tried Kidd or Tactical Solutions.

During the course of repairing many MK Series pistols and 10/22s with extraction problems, I found several bolts in both types of guns that were defective. The hole for the extractor was drilled just a few thousandths too far forward. This prevented the extractor from getting a good grip on the case rims and resulted in frequent stovepipes. By heating up a factory extractor red hot then pounding the claw back, I could reshape and temper the extractor to make it work. Aftermarket extractors won't fix this problem.

The fact that at least 4 different aftermarket companies make 10/22 & MK series extractors should be a clue …. factory extractors aren't so great.
