GP-100 Match 10mm Champion Questions

For those that have the GP-100 Match Champion in 10mm, a few questions.

Can you replace the grips with the more "stock" GP-100 rubber with wood insert grips?

Any quality issues? I realize that every now and then a dud slips through, but I'd rather know that I have a 1 in 100 or 1 in 5 chance before I plunk down moolah.

Any regrets in buying one?

To be honest, I'd rather have a "plain" GP-100 in 10mm, than a MC but I can't get one with a 4.2" barrel and adjustable sights.

BigRed45, I have a question about that gun (Well, maybe 2!): Do you need moon clips to shoot the 10mm? And does it also shoot the .40 caliber? Reason being, I saw a S&W revolver in one of the NRA magazines, and, to me, that seems like a pain in the butt to have to do. Of course, if some grizzly decides to become lost and hungry in the Stanton Hgts. neighborhood of PGH, I'd at least be able to protect my Weimaraner! I don't presently own anything more powerful than a .38 spl and the .327 Fed Mag. Thanks; Jeff.

Good Day,
I had one and it was nice and smooth; though, it did require moon clips for 10mm and .40 S&W. 10mm can be shot with out moon clips as it head spaces on the case mouth, but it won't eject well, if at all. I tried .40 S&W with appropriate thickness moon clips but it was not accurate enough for me. I also replaced the issue wood grips with a set of Hogue rubber grips and it handled well. I didn't keep it as I wanted to shoot more .40 S&W than 10mm and the fact that 10mm is expensive and not much more powerful than .357 Magnum.
Best,
Rob

BigRed45, in regards to your question about quality issues I currently have one that did have issues. My first range trip I fired 50 rounds each of .40 and 10mm with no issues, or so I thought. After firing the first 50 of .40 I ran a Bore Snake through each chamber six times due to the shorter casing of the .40 causing carbon buildup. By the time I got ready to eject the second cylinder of empty 10mm I was having to either take a small screwdriver and gently pry each casing up a little or use a wood block to tap on the extractor rod in order to get the casings to come out. Yes I was using moon clips. I figured that I hadn't cleaned out the cylinders very well so I finished the box and took it home for a thorough cleaning in the ultrasonic cleaner. Next range trip was all 10mm and had the same problem on the very first cylinder of six fired. By now I'm pretty disappointed so I called Ruger. They sent me a prepaid shipping label and in 2 weeks I had it back in my hands. The included invoice stated that they replaced the cylinder and the barrel, test fired, and cleaned before returning it to me. Sadly I have not had an opportunity to go to the range since receiving it back so I can't tell you if the problem was fixed of not. What I can say is that customer service like that is hard to come by these days, especially considering that I am the second owner of this revolver.

You can replace the grips with anything that fits a regular Gp100 including the hogue rubber grips, Lett style grips or some Thai wood grips.

I cant speak to the quality of the run since Ruger tends to be hit or miss but my example is by far the smoothest trigger out of the box of any Revolver I have ever bought new. Period!

I am not a Ruger fan or an any fan. I wont explain away issues a company or its products have and while I have a couple of Rugers and have owned afew others I also own and have owned Smith and Wessons.

Having said that ... After owning maybe a dozen Revolvers over the years and currently owning 5 .. I will repeat .. 10mm Match champion I got about a month ago is the NICEST gun in looks and operation I have every gotten out of the box.I got mine at what I thought was a great price from CDNN and couldnt be happier.

Now it makes me want a match in .357!

Edited to add
I probably have about 200 rds through the 10mm now maybe a touch more. Not enough to swear it wont break but enough to let me know it shoots like a dream.

I've got a MC 10mm I've had for probably a year or so. Here's my experience. I shoot heavy 200 grain cast plain base PC'd loads@ 1300 fps using accurate #9. It's a penetrator and I like the bigger bore over my 357 mag. I've shot over 1500 rounds of factory 180 grain and 150 jacket HP
40SW using TK custom full moon clips, never a lite primer strike. You gotta get the TK custom moon clips they are .040 thick and will properly headspace the cartridge. Ive tried em all just get the TKs. As for accuracy both 10mm and 40SW very good results at 25 yards off the bench. But 100 yards off hand shooting small IPSIC steel targets. 6 for 6 hits if I do my part,40 SW is very accurate in my revolver.
Here's the skinny on the Ruger. Built like a tank you pretty much can't hurt it. Shoot it for 3 life times it's gonna serve you well. No screws to rattle loose like SW. No ejector rod to unscrew and bend cause you can't open the cylinder! You won't knock or shoot it out of timing. A better mouse trap built for serious heavy use. It will for whatever reason get more powder under the extractor than SW so carry a hanky or old tooth brush when you feel the cylinder closes tight, cause it's gonna happen. Brush or wipe under the extractor to clear contamination and go back to shooting. I hunted with mine in mud, dust, rain just bad conditions and it always goes bang. Next a Holosun 509T green reflex sight, just gotta find 1 in stock. Happy shooting
