Ruger DAO 3" Speed Six NYPD 38 spl

I saw this for sale for $650. Did they make them in a finish like this or has it been bead blasted? It's not brushed for sure and looks too perfect to be original to me. What are your thoughts on the finish being original? Seller states it shows no signs of use and shows armorers star on the crane.

Looks like it's been bead blasted to me. And a finish that Ruger never offered. I would be very suspicious, especially since it's being touted as unfired. The absence of any turn ring whatsoever is telling. New guns from the factory usually have slight turn rings from the assembly process and test firing. Interesting gun but true collector interest is diminished in my opinion.

Waveform is by far a more expert opinion than mine.

I would concur, it doesn't look like a factory finish and this gone has been worked on. Almost definitely not unfired.

I have owned many ruger 6 series revolvers and have never seen a bead blasted finish liek that. I would be very sceptical.

I'm no expert on refinishing guns, but it almost looks like it may have been cerekoted.

I committed to buying this 3" Speed Six. If it's what I think it is, it's a very scarce model(judging from the serial number and my researching) and without a doubt a NYPD with the star stamped on the crane. No PD roll marks. Seller claims it's a very fine matte finish favored by NYPD over typical stainless finishes. I've never bought a gun I couldn't handle before buying. Maybe I'll get burned but I think it's worth the gamble. If the finish is original it's a very rare revolver in excellent shape. If not, it's still a hard to come by model and few have been located by collectors. Reading the replies to seller on the "other" Ruger forum, some of those folks are familiar with that model. It's a very short run late model sn#162-426XX. Collectors over there believe there were only 4-500 of them made(for NYPD & USPS inspectors).

From what I have seen lately, that is not a bad price for any Six in good shape.

Congrats.

I would say with the star on the crane, it is a NYPD issued weapon. The star was an inspectors inspection mark. Not so sure about the finish, but a good buy no doubt.

It took a while but I found a few GS-33 Speed Six USPS 3" 357 pictures online with the same factory finish. I've spent a week researching the GS-83 38 spl and the GS-33 postal service 357 3" My GS-83 has a serial number higher than any I've seen so far. The next highest GS-83 I've seen is eleven shy of my GS-83 and has been lettered a 1988 GS-83. I wonder if at the end of the run of Speed Sixes they used a few USPS frames they had left on very late run 1988 Speed sixes. I'm hoping the interstate transfer goes smoothly. I'll post pics if and when it gets here.

Hope this turns out well for you.

Not that long ago, I found a Speed Six, 9mm in stainless steel. To me, kind of a unicorn gun. I was the winning bid (high bidder) on the pistol. And, even if I did pay too much, it was and is still worth whatever I was willing to spend because I really wanted it.
