I would have to say that it has had a different barrel put on it then. The new style barrel has a rounded ejector slot, also there is no engraving on that side of the barrel. Still a great find.

To the OP that’s a really nice Ruger SP101 & a great price out the door. I want to get another SP101 3 inch barrel is my favorite barrel length as well. Congrats to the OP and enjoy shooting it.

Congrats...what do you plan to run through it?
I prefer Hornady's 158 grain XTP JHP in my 2" Taurus 85 (older model).
I've been looking for a 3" .38 special...love the feel of the 3" SP101's!

I just bought a 3" .357 off gunbroker for $385 too. Can't wait to take it to the range. I have lots of carry options but since we have bear and cougar in the neighborhood I might use it for carry when walking my dog.

Oh, yes: I think I'd carry it where you live!

That's a no-brainer! Don't take chances with such animals.

Go to a zoo and study how the animals move and visualize where you'd hold the sights on them in case you had to shoot one.

I have a first year 3" in 38. I carry others occasionally, but keep coming back to it.

Ruger makes a pile of special runs for a lot of different distributors, and that may well be the source of your 2016 dated SP101.

One thing for sure, you will never kill it with any .38 Special load
