I own 2 ruger firearms, nothing against the company (American Compact 243 and this GP100), I also own a Tikka, Mossberg, Taurus, Charter Arms, Marlin, H&R etc. Ruger is a great company that has made a few mistakes, they all do, they are 200 times better than Taurus if you experience an issue with their product. I am still waiting on a Taurus replacement that they messed up themselves, been 2 months now, they are not that great if you experience problems (barrel replacement they botched). I have nothing against Ruger, they did what I asked of them, end of story. The initial information is valid, why do you have a problem with it?? Hey there JLS1980 you have not done one thing wrong.........SR40ken he is a da** troll he just likes to pipe in with his mouth trying to get under anyones skin.........he's one of those show me how guys that doesn't know what he's talking about. I totally agree with your frustration after all this very thread there has been alot of Ruger Forum members that are having issues with the 7 shot Ruger GP100 .357. Many guys got their GP100 7 shot .357's replaced with 6 shot Ruger GP100!!! My question to you JLS1980 did Ruger replace your GP100 7 shot with another GP100 7 shot .357??? Iowegan who is a very respected Forum Member here he has done gunsmithing in days past he know's what he is talking about. He came right out and said Ruger screwed up on this GP100 7 shot .357. A design issue or engineering mistake!!! I have held back on getting myself a Ruger GP100 7 shot because of the very purpose of this thread!!! Addressing the issue if Ruger has indeed fixed their oops mistake on the Ruger GP100 7 shot .357!!! S&W 686+ and the Taurus Model 66 7 shot I haven't heard of any problems with these guns. BTW my son in law recently purchased a Taurus Model 66 7 shot revolver in .357 I made him a leather holster for it. I looked his revolver over closely to me it looks like a nice revolver and priced more reasonably then the Ruger GP100 or the 686+ 7 shot revolvers. Yes I have heard that Taurus is slow on their warranty issues. I have never had any problems with any Taurus revolver but the issue here is Ruger. I do feel that Rugers QC needs a vast improvement that's just passing it along back to Ruger that if they are getting negative feedback then do something about it!!! Most of the time Ruger will take care of the problems with their customer service and warranty repair!!! So yes Ruger does bloopers just like any other Firearm Company does!!! My question is why do these problem Rugers leave the factory in the first place!!! The newest Marlin 1894C .357 that I personally looked at in the LGS good hell the rear sight blade was missing on the barrel!!! Now see most of todays Firearm making companies do make a mistake!!! There's a thread here on a botched barrel on a brand new Ruger GP100 Match Champion!!! But hey there JLS1980 good luck to you with your new Ruger replacement GP100 did you opt to get another 7 shot .357 or a 6 shot Ruger GP100??? I hope all will work out for you & yes I also got some of SR40ken crap.........he doesn't know what he is talking about he just likes to bug guys and get under their skin just don't pay attention to him and again good luck!!!

Thank you for your response, glad there is some sanity among us. I opted for the 6 shot. They did what I asked and put the requested sights on the 6 shot version. They made things right with me, Ruger did the right thing. Taurus actually started to fight me, long story, I had to send pictures and wait on their judgement, then they said they had only the blued model, I told em negative, mine was stainless and that's what I should be getting back. Told me might be a while, so waiting I was willing to do. Still waiting lol my only gripe with the Ruger replacement was they shot it before cleaning grease off the cylinder housing and baked on crude, got it off mostly so no big deal. Had one scratch on the frame, buffed it out with a scotch bright pad, easy enough. It's a nice pistol. For my purpose of shooting max safe loads for hunting, 6 shot may be a better option than the 7 shot. Not sure if it really matters though. I love the gun, now I just need some range time. I plan 50-60 yard shots on deer when the situation presents, otherwise my main hunting firearm, Tikka 308, can take em beyond that range. Ruger has my respect for making things right, wasn't perfect but close enough, that's more than I can say for what Taurus did, they put an old referb barrel that I paid for on the gun and marred the frame in the process, pictures attached. Check out the trigger guard gouges and mismatched barrel, also non aligned, obviously didn't match the 7 shot frame. Last photo was pistol before they got it, I dropped it from tree stand after that pic and needed a barrel replacement, they did more damage than the fall did. Again, thank you for your post, it is much appreciated.

I tried all the .357 I had for fit. Winchester Silver Tip, Federal AE357, Remington HTP .357, Remington UMC .357, Barnes XPB .357, Black Hills .357
and Hornady Critical Defense .38 special.

Absolutely no bind! I can see a space between rims.

I did notice differences between this 1771, my 1755 (2014) and my 1705 (2016).
The grip tenon is marked with red/purple machinist's dye, a lot of it. Makes the frame easily identifiable.
The trigger guard latch/trigger return spring channel has a small hole, top and bottom. I assume to allow for oiling?
The top of the hammer is relieved further. Perhaps to avoid transfer bar pinch?
The crane has a small hole on the inside below the front latch. Perhaps to allow solvent to drain off after cleaning?
There is the letter 'A' lasered in the frame inside the crane opening.
The crane fits properly.

I'll post an update after my range session on Monday.

Great information Whalerman, thank you for your post! And most importantly, thank you for your service to the USA.

I figured that Ruger would make it right. Enjoy the six-shooter! I love my GP100.

As for Taurus...don't give them your money again. I do love my little Taurus 85, now relegated to tacklebox duty, but it's never caused any trouble for 20+ years. I don't trust their QC on newer guns and they recently ended their lifetime warranty on new models (85 got discontinued).

My theory is to buy from companies that cultivate a long-term customer. From all I've read here, Ruger does that. So does Kimber. I've never had to contact S&W, other than verifying the date of manufacture of a used 64 I purchased, but I get the impression they stand by their product, too.

One final tidbit: when a customer service person from a big firm says "no," stay polite, end the conversation, and contact them again right away. You'll most likely get a different person and a different answer

First range session with the 1771 was uneventful!
125 rounds mixed .357 with no issues and nothing outside the 9 ring.
I'm well pleased.

Awesome Whalerman and thanks for the data you posted here. I have my eye on a GP100 and I am excited on this revolver. I have not gotten a new revolver since last year a S&W and have been on the sidelines on the GP100. Looking forward to this one.

JLS1980, I didn't take any measurements. I detailed the changes that I noted
in my first post. I should add that my serial number is 178-98xxx.
Wish I had a better answer for you. Hopefully all the newer guns work as well mine. If you think of a specific item you want me to check on my gun I would be happy to check for you.
BTW, most everyone on this site is friendly and helpful. I hope to see more of your posts.

I picked up my new 1707 this morning and took it for a quick spin. I must say I'm very happy with it even though it's a 6 shooter. I like the hogue grip better than the rosewood rubber grip on the other one. They even put the fiber optic sight on it as requested. It shoots very nice. It looks like they sighted it in for me. Thank you ruger.

1771

Fellow members, I have two six shot GP 100's, great guns, both have been cut for moon clips. Really want to get a 7 shot. This thread has made me take a second look. Will have to research, maybe call TK custom that does the moon clip work and see what they say. Thanks for the posts

Love the 6 shot 1707 they sent me, put some underwood, reloads and cheap ammo through it the other day, was doing 3 inch groups at 60 yards with the reloads and Underwood. Reloads I used was 158 grain xtp over 17 grains of MP-300. No idea of velocity but there was a healthy boom, no unburned powder, dirty brass, using a federal magnum primer. I expect that load to surpass 1300-1350 fps. Honestly 17 grains looks like it filled the case to the bottom of the bullet, anything more would be compressed, had more boom and recoil than Underwood. The Underwood hit in similar point of aim and impact. Overall 100 rounds were fired, accuracy and function was great. Wish I knew what my reloads were doing performance wise, guess I need a chrono.
