Possible SP101 incoming via trade - thoughts?

So I have been wanting a GP100 forever, and finally put my G-17 up for sale/trade to help me finalize it (more mentally, since I don't really have a large collection yet and I prefer to enjoy shooting the few guns I do own rather than having guns I don't need/like sitting around).

I have actually saved up enough to buy a GP, but I simply never shoot my glock anymore. I just don't enjoy shooting it or cleaning anywhere near as much as my SRH. It basically gets no range time when I go unless with friends/family - and even then it's not me shooting it.

So I put it up for trade locally for trade/barter for a GP but I have a Sir offering me a SP101 as trade. The SP was next on my list to own after the GP.

What would you do? I know for some letting go of any gun is not an option, and I have never done so before either. But, the glock just sits there... gets very little love So I figure I ask for your guys opinions before I decide. Thanks!

Edit: After later agreeing to trade at a specified time with this gentleman, he emailed me this morning and cancelled

That's gotta be your call. Glocks are soulless and dime-a-dozen, so you can always replace it. I don't know if I'd make the trade, but I sure wouldn't blame you if you did. Any money in the deal or is the proposition an even swap?

Would be an even swap including my ammo for his. I think moneywise it's a very close deal, I just was so set on a GP I didn't expect to have to consider this offer of an SP so soon.

Such a tease and I think barring any really negative feedback I'm going to take it.

I'm in the same camp as you....I use my guns. If they are sitting I'll sell or trade. I know others will tell you NEVER to get rid of a gun, but that's just my opinion and I've sold several to fund others and have never really missed the ones I sold.

Not sure on the trade. Make sure you research values on each very carefully and if you do decide to meet look the gun over very carefully. Take measurements on headspace, endshake etc. I can tell you to be patient in these instances AND get what you want. If you want the GP100 either wait it out and sell the Glock, or wait for a trade on a GP. Get what you really want or you will regret it later.

I would in a heartbeat but I am a stainless steel revolver fan. I enjoy my SP and it is usually nearby for protection.

I have a G17 and a G26, but just for work purposes. I also have an SP101. I carry my SP101, I clean it even when it's not dirty, I enjoy shooting it, and it looks a lot better. If I didn't need my Glocks for work, they would be gone and quickly replaced by a GP100 because I already have an SP.

That being said, if you have the cash for the GP, and you want an SP, and you're not a fan of the G17, why not trade?

But, I have had guns I have traded and somewhat regret. But then I see the gun I traded for and not disappointed.

Appreciate it.

Money wise they both are selling new at around 525ish - 550 here. Can't get much more even than that i'd say. I may lose/gain 25-50 bucks depending so it's a very close call and definitely far better than selling -> buying, strictly talking cash flow.

I also hesitate because what if there is a Sir/Mam with a GP willing to make the trade and I didn't give him enough time to see my post.

I think i'd rather have a new SP than a "what if" though Besides I can trade my glock and still buy a GP. Again much appreciated your post.

According to trader it is new/never fired, however; for this I am not so concerned.

I bought my SRH used and it needed a trip back to Ruger as the cylinder was actually freely spinning and causing jams while DA shooting. They have taken amazing care of me. Of course standard checks will be made in person trade but I trust Ruger to back me up if needed.

What barrel length of SP101? I would consider a SP101 with either a 3 or 4 inch barrel.

It's the 2 and 1/4" I believe the model 5718.

If I was to hold out for the GP I would be going for the 3" anyhow. I am a fan of the snubs

Well, of course, what do you want the gun to do? Very important.

I have a GP100/6" and a SP101/4" in .357, and I'd cry big tears If I had to part with either one. They have different attributes and properties. The SP is more portable. The GP is more shootable. Carry lots, shoot little, the SP. Carry when needed, shoot lots, the GP.

The SP101/4", may be a decent middle ground, but it's not in the GP class for distances past 25yds. The GP with a 6" barrel is a hunting handgun, it would stick out on Hulk Hogan.

It's really what you want/need the gun to do for you.

You can trade a plastic gun for a real one? What's to think about? Having said that, it sounds like what you REALLY want is a GP100. In my experience, it's better to wait and get what you want. I usually regret settling for second best.

To TMan and BadShot - You guys are both right on. Right now the G-17 is my carry. And I loathe it most of the time. I want an easy (er) to carry + something I enjoy cleaning and maintaining.

As for woods carry, I always roll with my SRH. Weight is not an issue to me on my planned outings (once a week on average). I hike all the time (bear/wolf/moose country) and my OWB SRH set up is my dream and enjoyment. Very happy there.

My trips to the local market and gas station get tiresome with a gun that I do not enjoy though. Funny thing is my G17 fits snugly in my custom made SRH IWB leather holster, so I use that. But still I am not totally satisfied.

So, Badshot, yes, plastic for real, I'm going to be happy. Tman, I feel what I want is going to be better served with the SP101. Would you agree?

IMO, if your G17 is Gen 3 or earlier it sounds like a decent trade.

FWIW, I had a 2.25" SP101 .357 that I traded to a older friend who absolutely wanted one. He had regretted trading his off.

I currently have a SP101 3" .357 Stainless and GP100 Stainless 4" .357 which really compliment each other. I am trying to convince myself that I NEED a M77/.357 Stainless to keep them company.

I have already set up and agreed to the trade place/time. If all goes well you will have pics of my new Sp within 24 hours
