Hawkeye Compact 7mm-08 accuracy?

Picked up a M77 Hawkeye Compact in 7mm-08 with the 16.5" barrel thinking it would be a great little mountain rifle for hunting the thick timber. Having trouble getting an acceptable 3 shot group (2-3" at 100 yards). I'm not expecting sub moa with this gun but certainly better than that.

I handload and have run about a hundred loas of various charges of Varget, RL15, H4895, IMR4895, IMR4350 with Accubonds at from .015 to .050 off the lands. Seems I can get 2 shots reasonably close and always get a flier in a 3 shot group. 5 shot groups are worse as the barrel warms.

I noticed some barrel contact so took it apart and did some sanding so it's free floating but didn't change anything. Brand new leupold scope so I don't think that's it. I've read about the harmonic dampeners but from what I've read, seems varied.

Anybody with similar experience with this gun or other thought?

Thanks.

When you are dealing with sporter weight barrels and lighter, rarely does free floating produce positive results. It can and I’ve seen it happen, but typically that setup responds to a bedding job. I’ve accurized a few Ruger M77’s myself, only with one rifle which was a 7 Mag could I not reach respectability.

As always, try different loads, bullet weights, and powders if possible.

Definitely try different weight/brand projectiles. That rifle might shoot way better with Partitions, Interbonds, Trophy Bonded Bearclaws or others. Go one step up or down in weight and results might be totally different. Good luck!

Well a year later and I've tried a bunch more combinations. Easily have 200 rounds through and I have to say this gun has been disappointing. I think it could be an OK gun for areas where shots are always less than 100 yards but that's it.

The action needs to be bedded.
