First and foremost, I would like to introduce myself as I am a new member. My name is John, I was just honorably discharged from the Marine Corps as an 0311 and I now reside with my family in Philadelphia, PA. Firearms are my passion, and that's what brought me here. I need some quick help with my 10/22, but this looks like a very active forum and seeing as I love Ruger, I'm looking forward to sticking around. Anyway, here is the problem at hand:

I recently was released from the military and came back home. After 4 years, I was yearning to clean and my rifles, pistols, and shotguns. However, when I came to the point of cleaning my Ruger 10/22, I encountered an issue. It seemed like there was a jam, I could not pull the bolt back no matter how much force I put into it. I did a takedown on the rifle and everything seemed to be good. When I removed the stock and trigger assembly, the bolt was free and could be pulled back smoothly. The barrel was not obstructed at all, everything looked good. So I put it back together, and again the bolt could not be pulled back. After another 20 minutes of messing around with it, I found that it's a problem when I insert the forward retaining pin of the trigger assembly (the pin above the safety). When the rear pin (under the bolt buffer) is inserted, the bolt moves. When I insert the forward pin, the bolt is stuck.

I inspected the trigger assembly and I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. Has anyone every encountered or heard of a problem like this? I am at a lost on this one, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am a novice 10/22 owner. Took it apart after 500 rounds. Cleaned it. Put it back together. And got many misdeeds. Had a gunsmith take it apart, put it back together, and got a variety of issues. Sent it back to Ruger, and they fixed it for free. Now I need to get back to the range and see if it works correctly. Sorry I do not have an answer. Just my sympathy and a suggestion that perhaps Ruger needs to fix yours also.
Good luck and Happy New Year!

BlkHawk73,

It is the factory stock. The whole upper slides right in just as it did when I purchased it years ago. The trigger assembly operated fine when it was removed. Like I mentioned previously, it the rear retaining pin is inserted into the assembly, the bolt functions properly. It just doesn't function if that forward pin is inserted. The only aftermarket thing on this 10/22 is an upgraded bolt buffer that I installed maybe three years ago. It functioned just fine after I installed it. Everything else on it is stock.

John, Welcome to the forum, and glad to have you back home. There can be two issues I've seen cause this:
1) Do you have a rail on top of the receiver? Newly installed? Or maybe you tightened up the receiver filler screws, and now they are protuding into the chamber. The bolt will slide back and forth freely, until you put the receivers cross pins in. Seen this several times.
2)This is less likely, but just for kicks and giggles, remove the ejector completely and reassemble. See if the bolt cycles freely?.... If so replace the ejector, or be sure its not 180 degrees out.
Hope this helps. If you strike out take a pic of the trigger assembly and post it. We'll get it fix for you.

This sounds like good advice; I've heard of it before.
I also had a problem when the bolt stop pin wasn't in place correctly--slid out of a hole. I put masking tape over both holes so it wouldn't flop around so much--stock is supposed to hold the pin in, but something was a bit loose. But if you've replaced that bolt stop pin, you've probably already taken care of that problem.

Stay on line with the guys here--they'll get you going. (And help you get back into the at-home-in-US scene.)

Welcome to heaven john

John, YOU HAVE FOUND THE RIGHT PLACE AND WE ALL WELCOME YOU.

Try the fixes that others post. If that does not get you up and running!

Send it back to Ruger and they will get it done.

John, first welcome to the forum and Many Thanks to you for your service.
MY bet is on the extractor being bent or possibly flipped over, if it is in the slot on the top front of the trigger group, it is possibly bent. If it is not there, then it has flipped over 180 degrees and will not let the bolt function. if neither of these things is present, check the hammer spring. Just cock the hammer back with your thumb. If it doesn't go back, the hammer spring is not seated properly or the notch in the hammer spring keeper is up-side down. This notch should be facing up when you look into the top of the trigger housing.
Good luck,
Slugger
