My FIRST 10/22!

Hello All. I recently acquired a Minty 1978mfg Ruger 10/22 Sporter Deluxe, and I LOVE IT! I'm 50yrs old, and of all the guns that passed through my hands in that time, none was ever a 10/22! Before you guys scold me, I realize the error of my ways, and repented with this purchase. Now for some help. I put an old Bushnell 3x9x32 Sportview on it, I had laying around. What are you guys using for sighting in/Zeroing distance? I'm shooting strictly Hi Velocity Copper rounds, HP's & Solids, major brands: Fed, Win, Rem. I'm guessing 50-75yds, like most other 22's, but thought maybe there's a Sweet Spot for the 10/22. Thanks for any help.

Glad you finally joined the 10/22 owners club! Sight in at whatever range you will usually shoot. Twenty five or fifty yards probably will work.

That's great OP! There's something just plain fun about shooting 22lr. Enjoy. 50 yard zero works for me.

I don't think that 10/22s shoot significantly differently than other 22LR rimfire rifles with similar barrel lengths.

I personally zero at 25 meters because that is the range I am most frequently shooting at. But that is not much different than a 50 yard zero, depending on what ammunition you are shooting and the height of your optic center above bore.

With a scope height of 1.75" (where mine is) shooting "high velocity" ammunition such as CCI 40 grain Mini-mags, if you zero at 25 yards you will hit only about 0.1" high at 50 yards. The near zero will be 25 yards and the far zero just slightly past 50 yards by a yard or two.

If you shoot standard velocity ammo like CCI 40 grain Standard Velocity, with a 25 yard zero you will only hit about 1/3" low at 50 yards. Of course, those values might vary slightly between different rifles and different elevations and environmental conditions.

I use a 50 yard zero with a 4 X 32 scope. It's a 1988 vintage 10/22 and scope.

So far, better groupings have come with CCI standard velocity, as was mentioned earlier.

I had a Brimstone trigger rework. The trigger now breaks @ 1.75 pounds with zero creep/grit. Superb for target shooting. That's the only mod performed to the rifle. Prior to the trigger work, the factory trigger broke @ a creepy/gritty 6.5 pounds.

Congratulations, I hope you have as much fun with it as I have with mine. I sight mine at 50 yards on the premise that soda cans can be shot from zero to 100 yards without a holdover.High velocity ammo may extend that range.

I just scored a 1965 vintage with the Overton stock. It shoots aregged hole group at 25 yards with Federal copper plated HP.

FYI - They are addictive. I have five. 50 yards is my sight in.

Now be aware that 22's are notorious for liking one or two types of ammo. 3 out of 5 of mine love mini-mags but don't like standard velocity; 1 shots any hi-velocity bulk or premium brands and then my tricked out version only like the ELEY expensive stuff.

Have fun.
