Last shot hold open

I read some pots here or elsewhere on difficulty in producing a hold open on last shot capability for the 10-22.
I like the last shto hold open idea a lot. It prevents guessing did I fire the last round or how many rounds still in the magazine, or accidental discharge, from thinking or miscounting the rounds fired already.
The bolt hold open that has to be operated manually would require some modification or replacement or different part and....the magazine follower that would activate the hold open.
Financial Difficulty? A new manual/auto hold open piece in the gun and and mass produced replacement magazine followers to replace the current ones.
No rocket science involved. Produced cast metal alloy sized properly for shrinkage from the mold and a good bit of testing for perfecting it should produce the items for a dollar or two and sell for tne. The magazine followers alone might sell for 3-4 dollars if that.
Someone will ump on this at some point and double or triple the retail suggested and wonder why not too many buy it I suppose.
It would be nice to only spend a few dollars to get a hold open on last shot.

T/C has done it with their R22, cost under $300 new for the rifle. Spare magazines for the last shot hold open are $26. CSTMTech is on their second commercial generation of conversion kits, the 2nd gen does not require modifying the Ruger magazine. The kit cost under $200 plus install into your Ruger 10/22. Spare Ruger BX-1 magazines can be had for $12.

Part of the appeal of the 10/22 is the reliability. Adding more parts could detract from that.

Swashplate, I look at 10/22s much like the older Ruger Standard and MK I pistols where adults that can't count keep shooting until they hear a click. Millions of 10/22s have been sold so apparently an auto bolt lock is not a high priority. The basic design for 10/22s has not changed since they first went into production and I'm not holding my breath for any significant changes in the future. I do agree …. having an auto lock back bolt would be nice but it's not a deal breaker when buying a new 22 LR rifle so I would not be willing to pay extra for this feature.

It always amazed me that the 10/22 never incorporated a LSHO into the design over all those years of production. I figure if Marlin could do it, Ruger should be able to do it too. Nonetheless, it is a convenient feature. I was not aware, until now, that there were aftermarket parts to achieve LSHO on the 10/22, but WOW, $189 (current CST sales price for the kit, you install it) is a bit much. Since my entire 10/22 cost $200, it is not even a consideration. And the T/C R22, currently available for about $270, already has LSHO capability.

So my one & only 10/22 will go unmodified, and I will count my shots, or not, and simply shoot the thing. And still wonder why Ruger didn't do it every time I pick up my Marlin M60 or T/C R22.

Mikhail Kalashnikov did not incorporate a last shot bolt hold open option on his rifle either. It did not seem to hurt its popularity.

I know i would like to have the bolt hold open feature, but wow, not for the price they want for the kit. That kit costs more than what i paid for the gun. I guess i dont need it that bad

CST will install their kit for free, my Competition Model receiver and trigger group is on the way to them now.
