I am new to this site but not new to ruger firearms. I have a question and was hoping for some useful advice. I currently have a stock 10/22 and ruger sr22. Both shoot great. I was given a gift of 500 rds of Remington .22lr thunderbolts. I never shot those bullets because of the reputation of fowling that will occur. So here's the question if I mix some copper plated .22 with the thunderbolts every 5 rds or so will it help reduce the fowling? I will not use thunderbolts in my sr22.
You most likely you will shoot the whole box or maybe 20 bricks without an issue. When one fouls it really fouls and you will be way off target and if you hit the paper it will be a rectangular hole from bullet tumbling.
The new stuff they are making now says it has been improved and I have not heard any bad feedback on the improved thunderbolt.
Oh and, Merry Christmas, and welcome to the Forum from Georiga!
Welcome from a fellow relative newbie to Rugers (not guns).
For the past 5+ decades I've cleaned my firearms after each range session. Yes, Thunderbolts as well as other bare lead rimfire ammo makes are pretty filthy critters but they clean up easily. Copper washed rounds are 'less' dirty but all 22LR IMHO is going to create more grunge than most any centerfire ammo will. This may well just be the result of typically shooting more rounds 'plinking' with rimfire?
It is also my experience that .22s will have more duds per 1000 than other calibers, but considering the relatively low cost (at least it used to be - lol) I'm not bothered by a few non-fires. I would never use a rimfire for self defense because of the dud factor, so for general target and fun plinking purposes the duds present no big deal.
I agree with others, shoot the Thunderbolts. I've fired them through my 10/22s and 22/45s with no major issues. I clean after shooting and all is good to go.
