SR22 (rifle) magazines wiggly and falling out

Hello,

I'm a soon to be 10/22 owner - have a question about magazines fitting into a SR22.

I purchased some of the Archangel magazines (the one's with the wide AR style body) for myself and two of my friends. In one of the SR22's it fits great, in the second, they won't fit into the rifle properly (even with the magazine shell off). They don't 'click' in, are wiggly and will fall out.

Anyone shed some light on this? is it something to do with the magazine release or something?

Thanks for any input.

Cheers,

I think he said they both work in one gun and both don't work in the other, so it’s not the mags, it’s the more common issue of problems with a receiver not working with certain magazines. This can be caused by alignment of the trigger group and the receiver, or problems with the magazine catch etc. I'd really need the gun to examine the true cause.

Thanks for the input guys.

CmdrCody - that's right, the magazines work properly in one of the SR's. In the other, none work. Can you let me know what we should look for?

I haven't had the chance to have both SR's together, to do a simple visual between both (ie look up into the receiver to compare both - see if the parts line up the same etc). I was thinking that maybe on the one (that doesn't seat them properly) maybe the mag release sticks out more or something along those lines. Or, as you said, perhaps an issue with the magazine catch.

Any simple tips on what we can check for?

Cheers,

Try pushing and pulling lightly on the trigger guard to see if it moves in the receiver. That can effect alignment and fit of magazines. While the newer polymer trigger casing is actually stronger than the old cast aluminum ones it also seems to have more slop.

If your trigger housing is such a loose a fit in the receiver that it will not hold onto the magazine, the movement would be quite obvious to you. The easy DIY fix is this: KIDD Receiver Pins

The ultimate DIY fix is this: KIDD Threaded Receiver Pins With Countersink Tool

It would be hard to ghetto/******* up a substitute for much less.

I'd look first at the fit of the magazine catch and how the magazine release is seated on its shaft. If the catch is not sticking out far enough, the mags will not be held firmly. Below is a photo from my book showing the parts separated. If the catch doesn't stick out far enough, you can sand or file the front edge of the release arm to make it less wide (front-to-back). This will allow the catch to go farther forward when closed.

BUT: You must do this carefully. If you take too much off, then two bad things can happen:

(1) the non-beveled part of the catch could stick out past the receiver so that when you insert a magazine, the mag hits this and stops rather than riding over the bevel, so that you have to actuate the mag release to get the mag inserted.

(2) the mag release will be too short to retract the catch sufficiently for the magazine to be released, and so the mag will be stuck in the rifle. In either case, replacement of the mag release is the fix.

You can see how much room for error you have when you retract the mag catch: How deeply into the trigger housing does the tip of the catch go? You do not want the tip of the catch to protrude past the housing when you actuate the release.

Or, you could try a Kidd mag catch and Kidd mag release, also on the same site. Bottom line, if your trigger group is too loose in the receiver, altering or replacing the mag catch/release is not your fix. But in my experience this is a rare situation.
