I recently purchased the navy camo 10/22. Because the stock is hollow, I'm concerned about tapping it and installing an uncle mike's. Should I be? What do you all recomend?
good question, jonas. i'm sure people here have done it and succeeded. i was curious after you asked the question, and here's one thread elsewhere that i found, with some do's and don't's...
Drilled a hole the diameter of the threaded 1" long Uncle Mike's stud.
Applied release agent to the stud for later removal.
Injected a pretty large dose of JB Weld into the stock's void through the drilled hole with the stock held at an angle to keep the JB puddled inside the toe of the stock.
Rotated the stud in slowly, and kept it in position overnight as shown.
It's not that hard. You do have to drill carefully, making sure that the angle you're drilling will make the stud sit flush against the stock. I used the wood-style stud which cuts its own thread - the deep threads grab the plastic better than shallower, machine-screw threads do. I installed the stud to cut the threads, and then removed it. I pried the buttplate off and put a big glob of epoxy above the stud hole, and also put epoxy on the threads of the stud and screwed it back in. After sitting overnight, it's solid and hasn't even tried to move after many hours of shooting with the sling.
I was looking at various vendors for that model and . . some . . of them come
with the sling studs already installed. As such, I would suggest contacting
Ruger to see what options you might have. No telling what they might do
for you, without asking.
Welcome from Nor-Cal and congrats on your new 10/22!
