Lightweight 10/22 - Price check

Saw a lightweight 10/22 at a local gun store. Guy had it built but then needed money for other projects. The gun looked new/very clean. It pointed/transitioned great so I'm thinking about it for steel challenge.

I know the gun store owner and he didn't have any info on the build except the previous owner had bought it as a built gun and never shot it. Looking at it, the gun had the following:

PWS Raptor Stock
Whistle Pig Barrel
TacSol Ext. Mag Release
He thought there was some other work done but didn't have any info.
Bolt was jeweled, not sure if it was stock or aftermarket.
I'm guessing trigger is stock since it was plastic and had a crappy pull.
$600 but I could probably get it for $550.

I don't have any experience with building a 10/22. From the three aftermarket parts I know of, it seems like that is $450 worth of parts, plus the gun itself. Think it's a good deal at $550?

What really matters is of it's worth the price to YOU.
Personally, I'd pass. Tough thing with already built ones is you're getting what someone else that was right for them. Best to have it tight for you. Stock and bbl are fine - WP bbls are great. The rest adds nothing. TacSol mag release...oooooh a whole couple dollars and 2 minutes of time. The jeweling is purely cosmetic and far to common to make it anything special now. Odd part for me is why would someone spend the $$$ on the stock and bbl and do nothing with the trigger. I wouldn't let the trigger material bother me one bit.
I'd rather have one I decided upon it's components and end result. Simply being "custom" doesn't mean it's something spectacular.

This was my biggest issue. The balance was good and seemed to transition great. If it had a decent trigger, it would be in my safe right now. Putting a "fancy" stock on it but not doing anything with the trigger has me wondering if the builder knew what he was doing..

Yeah, I realize how much it's "worth" is a personal thing. But I don't know how these things hold their value. I checked in the classifieds for comparison but didn't see much. That's why I asked. I could care less about the "custom" aspect of it. I'm looking for a new steel challenge gun, this seemed to handle better than the AR types I've had. Looking at prices, I'm not sure I could build the same thing for less. However I'd still have put a trigger and c-more on it.

Welcome to the forum Romack. I'd probably pass on that one and start from scratch with a new one. That way you can customize exactly the way you want it, and probably not spend as much along the way.

Building or customizing a 10/22 is not that hard, and you can get some great advice here from experienced shooters/customizers.

Brand-new that stock is a $115 item. The mag release is zero, and WP barrels don't impress. Figure the base price of a used 10/22 at $180-200, plus 1/2-2/3 the price of the stock, plus 1/2 the price of that barrel new, you're at around $420-450. And that's only if you like that stock and that barrel.
