Looking to improve the "factory 2 stage target trigger" I'm looking to upgrade the existing trigger components and not a replacement drop in solution (kidd)

any suggestions?

Kidd would be good solution.

You should spend some time reading a few of the 10/22 threads. Lots of great info.

Assuming that you are not an experienced gunsmith, the best thing to do is outsource the trigger improvement job. You can purchase and install yourself a drop-in parts kit that is less than an entire trigger group. The best of these is the Kidd Trigger Job Kit for $105. The least (but I have one and am happy with it) is the Volquartsen Target Hammer and spring kit. Any of this kind of solution requires you to learn how to fully disassemble your trigger group, install the new parts, and put it back together. This is a trivially easy job once you learn how (I wrote a book about it).

The other approach is to have the Ruger trigger parts modified by a specialist gunsmith. The best known of these is Brimstone Gunsmithing (http://brimstonegunsmithing.com/) and their work is excellent. Also doing excellent trigger work is Connecticut Precision Chambering (CPC) at ct-precision.com.
