Back in 1969 when Hombre came out my mother took us to see it in Reno. I was shocked, enamored, and impressed.
Paul Newman fights racial and moral conflict at the same time.
I suggested, in 1984 to the Homiletics Professor the film Hombre with Paul Newman, Fred Marsh, Martin Balsam, Diane Cilentro, Richard Boone, and others.
My Homiletics Professor was Charles Bartow PH.D at San Francisco Theological Seminary. He had just shown us Twelve O' Clock High to show us a theme to always remember in Homilies: The EXHAUSTION of a morally conflicted man choosing the right path at the expense of HIMSELF.
Charles (in Seminary at SFTS in those days we all called each other by first name. Even the professors. The professors INSISTED. Charles said to me it is a better film and why did he not think about it.
I ended up with the gun in the film a few months ago after getting a revolver to pair with it.
1873 Winchester Circa 1890 on top in .32-20 WCF
He's on top there, the 73 Winchester. He's in .32-20 WCF. He is the rifle the movie Hombre was filmed with. Octagon barrel included.
I like the .32-20 mostly because it reminds me of the old west and the ranch I grew up on: Franktown JL Ranch. It's in Washoe Valley. It's a landmark now. I was there in that ranch from 1969 to 1976. My mother died there with Lymphoma. We watched the film together remembering the first time we saw it in 1969.
She died 15 FEB 1998.
The legend of the .32-20 lives on with me in the rifle and of course the appropriate pistol to go with it. I wanted the rifle first but it ended up being so difficult to find. Only because it's historic and real. It reminds me of times ago I can't relive.
