Afternoon Project

I found inexpensive metal plate targets at my LGS . I bought the small size since I wanted something for .22lr handguns @25yds, and my Charger and 10/22's at 50yds. The plate was $6.99. Today I went to Home Depot and spent $11.00 on lumber and hardware. I assembled a stand to hang the little gong. I made it large enough to accommodate the next larger size plate and I will get that this week. I'm happy with what I have now for $18.00.20191103_161059_1572821300157.jpg

You'll get hooked on shooting steel and buy more. Bigger the gong louder the ring.

My wife got me an 8" AR500 rifle gong w/ metal stand a couple of years ago. I have a blast with center fire rifles from 100 to 300 yards with it. It gets a workout from my handguns also at 25 and 50 yards. This little setup is intended for rimfire fun to have another target in my array.

Good layout and well done. Going to take your project and put one together for my grand daughter and me. I have the gong and most of the hardware already. I will get the lumber and use this platform you have in the pic. Thanks.

Check to be sure your local range or gun club will permit steel plate targets. Some ban them altogether and others restrict them to minimum distances or configurations. My club allows only "downswing" types at 40 yards minimum.

Have fun. I had the flat mending plates, screws, and white spray paint. Everything else was in the $18.00 budget. If you have S-hooks and corner braces you are golden. I used 2ea 2x2x36 pt deck pickets (0.87/ea) and a 2x4x36 pine board that was $1.82.

I am fortunate to have family land to set up my own range on. I have a covered picnic table outside my camp where I shoot rimfires and handguns at 25 to 50 yds. I have another area on an access road in our timberland that has rising terrain behind it. I can set rifle targets out to 450yds. My targets are only limited by my imagination.

On weekdays, Northshore Sports Club in Lake Forest has one of the two ranges set up with steel targets. A little pricey, but you do get the range to yourself for an hour (max group size is 2 on the steel range if you want to play dueling tree games).
