The media have been putting an anti-gun (or at least anti-private-gun-ownership) “spin” on this story, when it appears to have been a purely business decision. As others have already said, Colt is facing a ton of competition in the “AR-15” market and they aren’t the most popular brand any more.

I own one Colt, it is a Woodsman, I inherited it, and will never sell it. That being said, I have never owned any Colt revolvers (sorry, but S&W makes revolvers, among others) and only owned one Colt 1912, ( which I wish I had back) and NO Colt rifles! Now I never will. Sorry, but this feels like a sellout!

The first gun I ever bought was a used Delta Elite, that was almost 30 years ago. Like an idiot I sold it. If anything I sold Colt out & have been kicking myself ever since. The last thing we need is a division amongst ourselves other than the ever popular steel vs polymer debate. To think Coltís decision was based on the current political climate is preposterous & only gives in to the anti gunners rhetoric. Maybe one day Iíll own another Colt but for right now Iím happy with my Rugerís, & other offerings I have.

It seems that over the years Colt has gotten into the bad position of there being nothing that they make that someone else makes better and cheaper. Not a formula for success.

Colt builds rifles to mil-spec standards in order to comply with their government contract. Things like individual barrel testing vs batch testing costs money. It doesn't mean the barrels are any better or worse but when you have to test all of them rather than 1/100 that costs time, labor and money. FN has the same problem. Colt and FN are the two most expensive DI rifles on the market for the same reason. Their manufacturing process is more expensive than other brands. It's just that simple.

I wouldn't feel too sorry for Colt (or FN). They make more money on the rifles they sell around the world to military and government agencies than they do selling to civilians. If the civilian sector was more profitable they'd tell the governments to pound sand and focus their efforts on selling rifles to us. They've chosen which market which yields the best return on their investment. Can't blame them for that.
