Determining scope ring height....got a question.

On Tuesday, I went and picked up my M77 MKII Target in 6.5 creedmoor. (I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!) Now, I need to figure out what height rings I need for it. My scope is a 6-24x50mm w/ a 30mm tube. I would like to know how to figure out what rings I need to get the scope to just barely clear the barrel. I know Ruger has a chart, but I think I can use the next size smaller rings than what the chart says. Here's why I say that.....

I have a 6-18x50mm 1" tube scope sitting in the closet, do I took my rings that came with the rifle (4 & 5) and installed the lower halves of the rings on the rifle. I sat the 1" tubed scope in those rings and it would neeeeaarly work. The objective lens of the scope would hit the barrel just before it sat in the base of the front ring. Here's the deal though, my 30mm scope has a objective lens that is 3/16" smaller in diameter than my 1" tube 50mm scope. That would give me 3/32" more clearance which would work. BUT, I don't know if the 30mm rings have the same amount of meat (so to speak) between the scope and the rifle. In other words, does a #4, 1" Ruger scope ring have the same amount of steel between the bottom of the scope and the top of the rifle as a #4, 30mm Ruger scope ring?

Any and all help is appreciated!

Lead Slanger,

I use the Brownells Catalog (or WEB Site) they have all the ring dimensions and you can with a little math figure it out. But I did not see any Ruger rings in their catalog so.

Try the Selection guide at Shop Ruger

If that doesn't help or is not defined to your satisfaction call.

New Hampshire Customer Service Department at 603-865-2442

They should be able to help.

Best regards,

Roadie

Nevermind, I found the answer I was looking for. They are the same height, so yes, #4 & #5 rings will be the way to go. They should put the scope right over the barrel with about 1/16" clearance. Perfect!

I will. It was on my list for a long time. I'm ready to be able to get it out and put some rounds downrange.

Should be a good deer caliber. Looks like similar ballistics or a shade lower than a 270 Win. When you get it dialed in then post up a range report.

I am in love with the 6.5's. The Creedmoor, the .260 Rem and the 6.5x47 Lapua. They are awesome rounds and not a real difference in either three. The long, skinny, high ballistic coefficient rounds have less recoil and wind drift than a .308, with a trajectory like a .300 Win Mag. They carry their weight real well too. (hence the high ballistic coefficient numbers) At 1000 yards, they put %85 of the energy on target as a 300 Win Mag. What's not to like about that? I can't see where anyone could go wrong with one of these calibers.

I sure will get a range report on her. It may be a little while, but I'll get it as soon as I'm able to.
