Does anyone else use Alcohol for routine cleaning

I was just curious to see how many folks here also used alcohol to clean their firearms. I lube and protect with Ballistol after a good alcohol wipe down.

If I used alcohol on my pistol, it wouldn't shoot straight anymore

I'd rather leave a light coating of oil on my firearms to prevent rust and corrosion than to have them squeaky clean.

Alcohol is not the best hydrocarbon solvent (can't tell you why, I am just a pharmacist, not a chemist), so it might not take off tough greasy stuff. But, it won't hurt as long as you continue your Ballistol after to protect. As a note to all, do not use "rubbing" alcohol if you want something truly clean; as it contains an oily substance (to make the rubbing it on smooth) and will leave a harmless film on everything.

Denatured alcohol works great for metals, I have never personally used it on a firearm, but it works wonders on my wood working tools

Alcohol is hygroscopic (attracts moisture) and is not a good choice for cleaning guns.

I use it for cleaning many things including my guns since we keep a supply of 99% iso alcohol around for various tasks with the cattle. Most of my guns are run dry or very lightly oiled on the inside because of the exposure to below freezing and often below zero for a large portion of the year and i NEED my guns to work so i use it to get them squeeky clean inside. With no carbon buildup and no or minimal oil my 870 can be counted on down to -40. Also makes pretty good parts cleaner.

I just use Ballistol. It removes every trace of carbon and residue & is a great lube & protectant.

I always used rubbing alcohol to degrease surfaces, I never realized it left behind a film of sorts.
