Just bought my first deer gun today im an experienced shooter that just decided to get into hunting this year i bought a savage 11scxp in .308. it came with a bushnel 3x9x40 scope on it. i hope to get it out to the range one day after work this week. this will be my rifle used in maine and vermont where i have family that hunt. as for hunting in MA i bought a remington 870 express combo gun because MA is a shotgun only state
AHH The hunting bug....now your bit,you will stay bit....it gets addictive....... on a good day there's not much of a more enjoyable way to spend time...good for you.
There are a few shotgun only states. It's sort of an outdated idea with the new rifled barrels and sabot slugs we have today. These are easily 100+ yard guns with incredible stopping power.
I remember many decades ago going out with a buddy of mine who was trying to sight in his slug gun. At 35 yards, he was getting 4" groups and the slugs were tumbling! Today's smooth bore slugs are much more refined and you can probably get out to 60 yards or more easily.
Remington 870, a great one. You also can mount a red gun lasers, it wil improve your rate of success. You know the gun lasers for slae on web, wish you have a good huntting time.
Modern shotgun slug is still slow and hits ground sooner than rifle bullet. The law is not so about accuracy but how far a round can carry on a miss. Although it still may be a misconception when looked at from a richochet standpoint.
another vote for the well rounded .308. You'll do fine with that round and your current setup. If you don't handload- find a cartridge that Savages likes and buy it by lot # in quantity.
