OM Single Six With Hair Trigger

I recently picked up a well worn bargain priced Flatgate Single Six sight unseen. One thing that came with it that I did not expect is a ridiculously light hair trigger. :( It will drop the hammer if you think about touching the trigger. The trigger will drop the hammer on half cock. Is there any chance of a likely fix without picking up a set of replacement parts?

I have considered sending the gun back to Ruger for the safety upgrade. While I am not a fan of altering original Rugers, it would get the internals replaced for free and I could get them to do a reblue at the same time. This old gun is not going to be much of a collector in the shape that it is in anyway. Any thoughts?

If you mean that the trigger will drop the hammer from half cock then it would appear that some Bubba has done a "trigger job" or something is broken. On the old model guns the safety and loading notches are designed to capture the nose of the trigger so that the hammer can't be dropped from those positions.

Since the lockwork you now have has been trashed there is really nothing to lose by sending the gun to Ruger. As REB said, you can always restore the gun later with "new" old parts.

Note about the Ruger safety update: While the update does provide a transfer bar so that you can safely carry six rounds, I am pretty certain that it does not include the feature that allows the loading gate to retract the cylinder stop so that the gun may be loaded with the hammer fully forward, such as is the case with the new model single sixes. The conversion actions must still be loaded from the half cock position, which leaves a window for an accidental discharge while lowering the hammer to the fully forward position. A Ruger conversion action is not the same as a new model action.

If I am wrong on this point, somebody please step in and correct me!

Heatingman if you send the gun back to Ruger they may keep the old parts as I have heard others say. You may want to strip them out and keep them. It may be possible that you could find a gunsmith and have him weld up the notches to the point where they are safe again. I have also heard that old model parts are getting harder to find.
