Cylinder Interchangeability??

I'm not having much luck locating a 44 mag/spec cylinder for my 44-40 Vaquero. I have found a Blackhawk 44 mag. cylinder and I'm trying to find out if it is compatible with my Vaquero.

Maybe? That is the problem with buying an extra cylinder for your gun. Blackhawk and Vaquero cylinders are interchangeable, but the tolerances may stack out against you.

Example: I have a vaquero and an accusport bisley in .45 colt. The vaquero's cylinder will work in the bisley, but there is excessive endshake and excessive b/c gap. The bisley's cylinder will not fit into the vaquero. It is just a hair too long.

Your best bet is to call Ruger and ask if they would fit a .44mag cylinder to your vaquero. All they do is grab cylinders from a bin until one of them fits properly. I checked into doing this several years ago for my vaquero in .45colt. I wanted a .45acp for cheaper practice. I think the cost was about $100 back then. $80 for the cylinder and a minor fitting fee. I bought reloading equipment instead. Even cheaper practice, and the ability to load hot hunting loads.

I called Ruger the other morning looking to get a 45ACP cylinder for my NMBH. They want $95 for the cyliinder, $50 in labor to fit it, and $30 return shipping for my gun and the new cylinder.

I haven't made my mind up yet...

I'm still new to Rugerforum.net, but I have some experience with 1911s (Shame Ruger isn't producing one of those) and I'll second the comments on tolerance stacking. At just under $200, I agree it isn't cheap, but consider the cost of a catastrophic failure due to the cylinder misaligning with a live round. One, the pistol is either ruined or in for a major overhaul. Second, which hand do you want rebuilt?

I had my .45 Vaquero back at Ruger recently, and while it was there, I asked them about fitting a .45 ACP cylinder to it. They would not do it. Apparently because it was never a cataloged item (although I believe a distributor did order a run of special editions that had a .45 ACP cylinder paired with a .45 Colt in a Vaquero). I mention that because if they ever cataloged a 44 Mag Vaquero with 44-40, then you should be able to get them to fit one. I'd say it would be highly worth it, because I bet the cost will be less than that of a 44 Mag Vaquero, which has been discontinued. Unfortunately, if the two calibers were never cataloged together in the Vaquero, I think you're pretty much relegated to a custom job, or try to find a cylinder and take your chances.
