I Think I Traded Up

A little back story before the story. I good friend and I went to a gun show a few weeks back. After some haggling and sweet talking, I walked out with a NIB Ruger Precision Rimfire .22LR with the BX-15 and a spare BX-1 to the tune of $300 out the door. A very thrifty purchase in my VERY non-professional opinion.

Fast forward a bit, I’m still trying to decide on a scope for the RPRimfire, and I see an ad on a local classifieds board. The gentleman was looking for a Precision Rimfire in .22LR, and was offering a Ruger AR556 MPR as a straight trade. I was immediately tempted as the first thing that came to my mind was centerfire>rimfire, with maybe a few exceptions here and there.

I contacted him, we danced through the logistics of working opposite shifts, and met up to inspect each other’s firearms. He was an older gentleman, appeared to be in his late 60’s, although that’s just a guess. Turns out, his MPR was also NIB, with not a shot fired. But what really caught my attention was the CMC single stage trigger and POF Tomahawk charging handle he had installed. I was not expecting any aftermarket parts, let alone “good” ones like a proven drop in trigger and a quality ambi charging handle.

I was in for the trade, so long as he was happy with the RPRimfire. He checked it over, ran a borescope down the bore. I hadn’t shot the gun, but was still a bit nervous since I’ve never done a private sale with anyone who ran a borescope down the barrel. Seemed much more knowledgable on firearms than I, and very thorough on inspection. I had a feeling he was going to decline, as his face didn’t show enthusiasm. Dang it.

He turned, gave me a little smirk, and said “So what do you think?”. I didn’t want to reveal my eagerness even though I had a feeling he already knew. I said I was regretful I didn’t get to shoot it and see how it performed, but that I would make the trade if he was interested. We shook hands and the deed was done. He said he would send me a pic of how it shoots after he gets some trigger time with it and sees what it likes ammunition wise. I thought it was a kind offer because I really was curious as to how it would shoot.

I was putting the boxed up MPR in my trunk, and he approached me carrying a smaller box. He handed it to me, and it contained (15) boxes of Federal MSR 5.56x45 55gr FMJ ammo. He smiled and said “This will get you started. I hope you enjoy the rifle.” I tried to decline the ammo, since I hadn’t provided any, but he wouldn’t take no for an answer. I thanked him and told him how appreciative I was of the ammunition. We shook hands again, and went our separate ways.

So in total, I received a NIB MPR with upgraded CMC trigger and POF charging handle, (2) Gen2 Pmags, and (300) rounds of factory federal MSR ammo for my $300 RPRimfire. At the risk of sounding braggy and boisterous, which is FAR from my intention, I think it was a great trade. I do feel as though he got the short straw, especially with the ammunition included, but he insisted.

TL;DR version:

I traded a NIB .22LR RPRimfire for a NIB AR556 MPR. Think I got a good deal.

What do you guys think?

Secondary question, I'm still in the market for a scope although now for an 18" 5.56 rifle instead of a rimfire. What do you guys recommend to fit the bill? I guess it would be a 5.56 DMR style rifle.

Thanks everyone!

Wont know how you did until you have shot it .
Maybe you did well and maybe the old man saw you coming and skinned you .

Dad told me to never buy a car unless you drive it first...that also applies to guns as well as cars horses and motorcycles . Caveat Emptor !

After 500 rounds tell us how you like it !

Could be 100% correct with this statement. I need to get some rounds through it.

I'd say an amazing deal! $300 retail difference....looking real quick. Hot rifle? lol.

If it worked for both of you that's all that matters.

Scope wise I'm sure you'll get a lot of good feedback. AR is not going to be a tac driver so scope choice shouldn't be in the big money range...IMHO.

Enjoy your new rifle!

Not gonna lie, that thought did enter my mind.

I think it’s on the level though.

I’m no expert but it seems to me like you got a great deal to start with on the RPR .22. If the AR functions well then you’ve made out like a bandit! Let us know how it runs...

Yeah it took about 45 min of BS’ing and 3 return trips to his booth to secure the deal. He had it advertised for $375.

I have a Ruger MPR in 5.56 I replaced the factory muzzle brake with a regular flash hider. No way would I replace it/trade it for a RPR. You made a good move.
I did install a run of the mill, 3-9x40 scope. Rifle shoots better than I do. In my 25 year old grandson's hands it is a 1 moa rifle. Not so for me.

Thanks Clyde! I havent shot it yet, although I put a set of MBUS sights on it. The trigger breaks at 3lbs 5oz so I'm hoping I can acheive MOA with it. I will post results in the Range Report subforum after its maiden voyage. Although I don't have a hard time table for this.

Still in for scope recommendations and opinions, as well as user experience and advice.

Thanks everyone!

Congrats on a great deal for both of you. Based on the fact he gave you the ammo I'm 100% certain he was tickled with the trade. I try to avoid placing a whole lot of emphasis on dollar value when I'm making a trade. It plays a part but the most important thing is whether or not both people are happy with the trade. It sounds to me like the *ahem* older gentlemen in his late 60's had got to the point in life where he valued a gun he wanted more than the one he had. I get it. Been there, done that with no regrets. Sometimes I know I got more value for my trade than the other guy did. Sometimes I didn't. In both circumstances I knew exactly what I was doing and was fine with the trade. I've also given a younger guy a break on a deal when I was pretty sure he had done all he could afford to do to make the trade happen. As an *ahem* older gentlemen in my 60's I can afford to be a little generous to a young fella if it will help him out.

Didn’t mean anything by the “older gentleman” remark! I just consider anyone older than my Dad as an “older gentleman”

I have been looking at the Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16x44 FFP with the 30mm main tube and probably a Vortex cantilever mount. Anyone have first hand experience with said optic?

This older gentleman thinks it was a good deal. I believe next year I transition from mid 60's to late 60's.

Absolutely will! I may throw a SWFA 10x on it this week and get a little shooting done this coming weekend. I dont want to be limited at 10x magnification on a "Multi-Purpose Rifle" long term though.
