I would consult your states laws concerning this, but it's always a good idea to let an officer know you are carrying. It will put a sense of trust between the 2 parties and it will also result in less trouble if he finds it without you telling him...

Good advice here. In fact, I printed out the entire document for the state of Alabama (it's only a dozen pages or so) and keep it in the glovebox--just in case. But I agree with kingpins9. Why do I need to inform law enforcement when I am engaging in a legal activity?

Hi folks! I have asked a number of LEO this question. Here is the common answer- if you get pulled over, keep your hands on the wheel and when asked for license and registration, tell him/her you have a concealed weapons permit and have a loaded firearm in your possession. This lets them know you are armed and legal and no surprises....best rgrds...

Alabamans do not have a duty to inform. Neither is it the law in the state of Georgia.

No reason for a cop to know you have a gun unless you plan on doing them harm. The logic of informing a cop when you are legally armed is ridiculous.

If legally required, of course I inform them.
If asked, I tell the truth.
If I'll be reaching somewhere to get information that is in the same location as or very near a weapon, I inform them BEFORE reaching.
If I am asked to step from the vehicle and I'm carrying, I'll inform them before stepping out.

Otherwise, I see no logic in providing irrelevant and unrequested information.

Hmmmmm....not sure if I pi--- off a retired LEO or not. If so, certainly did not intend to. I was just providing feedback from the LEO's I speak to, which include local, state and federal in my work. From my comm's with them, they concur and appreciate the heads up on being armed. My immediate concern would be having some rookie discover my weapon prior to being informed, leading to unanticipated consequences, such as having my a-- shot, which by the by, I am rather fond of.....best rgrds...

Respectfully suggest that a little honey works a lot better in this situation than a lot of manure. (not meant about anyone’s opinions on this forum but how the LEO who has stopped you perceives the situation)

TN does not have a duty to inform either but when they run your driver’s license it tells the officer that you have a carry permit anyway. I am positive AL works the same way.

I personally give LEOs respect as a professional and if they give me reason to feel they performed otherwise I report them to their chain of command. (no exception rule just like 911 instantly if someone makes a threat) My experience is that I am given the respect back that I give them and once again if they are out of line I do not argue with them just get the info to talk to the chain of command.

The last time I filed a complaint, the officer in question got behind me on the highway the next day and followed me from several cars back for quite a stretch of highway. I called the PD and asked for the supervisor of the LT I filed the complaint with and explained to the Major what was going on. After my call the officer in question put on his flashers and took off at over 85 mph (headed to the PD HQ). I have no idea where/what happened to the guy but I never saw him in our area again and the Major personally called me and assured me that I would never have a problem with the officer again. I believe that my staying calm but persistent help resolved the situation.

All that said, LEOs are trained to respond to a weapon as a threat unless ALL EVIDENCE and INTUITION indicates there is no threat. I teach students to let LEOs know your legally armed, treat them as a professional, except it if they ask to take control of the firearm while they check your creds (every state RIGHTFULLY gives them that right) and no one 'round here" ever has a problem.
