Just being curious...but does anyone still CC a 5-shot .38 snubbie revolver as a BUG or even a Primary anymore and if so, what?

If so, what is your preferred ammo for personal defense?

Just being curious...

I pocket carry a S&W 442 Airweight in .38 Spl. My carry rds. are Speer GD 135gr. I carry it in an Uncle Mikes #4. I also carry a speed strip on my belt. For my area and daily routine I feel pretty comfortable with my choice.

I don't carry my 642 as much as I used to but when I do it's carried in a Mika pocket holster loaded with Speer Gold Dot 135 grain +P. An alternate load is the Remington Golden Sabre 125 grain +P JHP.

I know a couple people that carry SW 442 with Hornady Critical Defense, .380 ACP, FTX, 90 Grain.

I bought them the revolvers and after trying several Hornady FTX brands, they decided to go with the ammo listed above. Age is the biggest factor in their decision... they are in their 70s. They can fire bigger calibers with a table in a range type setting, but as far as carrying, drawing it and firing multiple shots they feel this is their best option.

I prefer they carried something with more power but I have to just stay in my lane and be glad they at least carry something.

The only gun I would conceal carry is a DAO wheelie. .38 +p has good expansion and penetration with the right ammo. See Lucky Gunner’s ballistics tests at https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/rev...llistics-test/

The Hornady Critical Defense round, my pick, has moderate recoil, flash, and noise out of my Kimber K6S, a gun I pocket-carry with confidence. Shot placement is key with any bullet...so practice draw shots, shots while moving and from cover.

It is a six-shooter, however, which may disqualify my pick.

My EDC is a Ruger LCR .357 loaded with .38 Special ARX 77 grain ammo. I rotate it with my LCRx 3" .357 loaded with the same. I carry an additional 5 rounds in a speed strip.

Check out the poll here. 12% of respondents carry the .38. A lot of good responses on ammo, so if you are considering it, you are in good company.

The LCR in 38 was the first ccw gun I bought in 2018. I just took a ccw class finally, after all this time and plan on applying for the license as soon as I can. But sure, a 38 in spring or in fall weather seems just fine to me. In winter I'd switch over to a 9mm Shield, and in summer i'd probably carry a 380, but I see no reason to not go with a 38 if that's what you have.

I favor the Speer short barrel ammo

When I wear athletic shorts a LCR38 is my go-to in a Sticky holster.

I've CC'd a 5-shot snubbie, an SP101 in .357, since December 1994, often with .38's in it...and have been quite comfortable with it. I tend towards a Glock 36 in .45 acp as an EDC, but I will often throw a Taurus 85 in a pocket for a quick run out to a store or to pick a child up from an activity or friend's house.

Recently (2+ years ago) I picked up an older Taurus 85 (stainless steel version built in 1990) that was still NIB...and it shoots the Hornady 158 grain JHP XTP to point-of-aim every time...and gives as good or better penetration as many 9mm rounds do.
I'm comfortable with it...I can hit what I shoot at with it...and the .38 caliber has been around for a loooooooong time.

I've had a S&W 637 from the Performance Shop, which was really a nice revolver, but it was somewhat nasty to shoot the 158 grain rounds through where as the steel Taurus helped to handle the recoil a lot better. The same goes for the Ruger LCR vs the SP101...the SP101 just helps manage recoil better!
