    Thanks Iowegan for the prompt response. I do mean trigger return it comes back hard against my finger after the spring change. I did your method of cleanup on the action so it is smoother now anyways.
    My Hawkeye is just my hunting rifle now.What do you think of Ruger rifles compared to others as far as quality and depenability for hunting guns ?

    I'm not sure what you meant by "trigger slap" .... never heard of it. If you mean trigger return, then yes, putting the factory trigger spring back in should fix the problem.

    With your Hawkeye .... it's not a free floated barrel. Normally, free floating is only done with match grade and varmint rifles .... not with hunting rifles. Free floating can improve accuracy but the rifle tends to get very fussy with ammo due to barrel harmonics that change with each different load. With hunting guns, you seldom get a second or third shot on Bambi and match grade accuracy is not required. I wouldn't bother with free floating if you plan to use the rifle for hunting.
