How many .405 shooters are out there...?

Until a couple of years ago when a friend with a Winchester 95 asked me to get him some reloading components, I never realized that the .405 Winchester was a .411 bore. Since my favorite revolver round is the .41 Magnum I decided to buy one of the K1-H models in .405....what a great shooter. And it is really fun to shoot with pistol bullets...

...any one else out there a .405 shooter?

Bob

TR's favorite round. I have never shot it but but it's a great old round in this day of short and ultra short super magnum baloney. How is it grouping with it and have you hunted it yet?

I have only shot the #1 at 50 yards with a NECG peepsight and two different Tasco Titan Scopes...one a 1.5-6 and the other a 1.25-4...which is going to be the resident scope for now.

Groups at 50 yards using the factory Hornady RN run in the .75" range. Have not had a chance to do much reloading for it yet but using the Hornady 300 grain RN bullets and WW748 powder I was able to duplicate the factory 2200 fps chronographed load.

Also have shot just a few Speer 210 grain Gold Dot HP bullets using 2400 powder at about 1800 fps....nice plinking and varmint load.

Shell Reloading of Az. makes a 400 grain load and bullets in SP and FMJ. He lists the velocity at 1900 fps from an Encore. I bought some of the SP bullets but have not had the time to try his load recommendations. In talking to the Hornady Reps at the SHOT Show last year they said their new 400 grain bullet for the .450/.400 NE should work in the .405 as they are going to be .410 in diameter.

I have a couple of 405's in the Win 1895 repros. They are nice rifles, but wish I coulf justify one in the #1 as well as a few in the new older calibers.

Bringing an apparnet dead thread to light again. I'd wanted a 31 in .405 for quite a while but as they're not exactly growing on trees it tok some time to find one. Finally did find a mint used one at a very good price. Now to just find time to shoot the darn thing.

BH73...I know what you mean about time...too many guns and not enough of it.

I just bought some bullet casting equipment after not having cast any bullets since the early 1980s... Looking forward to casting a 400 grain Saeco FP just for the .405. I loaned the mold to a friend who also has one of the K#1s in .405 and he should be casting some bullets up soon...

AHHHH! .405 = TR's "Big Medicine"

It seems like that old cartridge and the #1 simply go together. May have to look for one of these while I am also looking for a #1 RSI in 7x57.

I got a #1 Tropical in 405 a couple months ago, just started working up loads for it and was leaning more towards casting my own lead, but I seen folks mention the .41 mag loads, can you tell me more?

Another fan!

Absolutely love the .405! Probably my favorite cartridge of all time.
Along with my #1 Tropical, a pair of original 1895s make up my battery of them. One Winchester is a special order, deluxe, take down model w/a Lyman #38 receiver sight that was made in 1911 and the other is a very early .405, also a special order, w/ a shotgun style buttstock and Lyman #20 "Jack" front sight, that was shipped from the factory in Sept. of 1903 (w/factory letter). I hope someday to add another one to the lot in the form of an 1885. We'll see.

Can't help with the load data, as I am just beginning to reload. But, I thank you for bringing this topic back up. Reminds me to get back on the hunt for a #1 in .405. Like I need an excuse for another gun
