No.1 Calibers

What happened to all the caliber offerings with the No. 1? I guess I'm behind times. I only see a 45/70 listed in the medium sporter and seems there use to be several offerings. I don't see the 22-250 in the Varmint rifle either.

After doing a little searching I found where they can be had in everything from 22-250 to the monster 450/400 Nitro Express.

Ruger #1 Rifles

I think I found one or two I want with the first being a 300 H&H. Odd caliber by today's standards but, for some reason I've always liked that cartridge.

Per Ruger's site: RugerŪ No.1 Rifles are available in select calibers and configurations for 2013, these caliber offerings
will be discontinued in 2014, when we will introduce new calibers for these configurations.

The #1 is simply a low demand model so by keeping variations/chamberings down it allows the resources to be better used elsewhere and give a bit of uniqueness to them at the same time.
It's a pretty easy model to find used and new still. Some other chamberings not listed in the catalog have been shipping out as well so have your dealer check. Check GunBroker as well.
Have 6 or 8 #1's here currently. Liek you, one I always wanted was one in .300 H&H. Then, they didn't make 'em so I found myself a used .30-06 thinking it would be perfect for a rechambering. Before that got done, the factory ones were coming so I held of, made my calls and got a pair of the 1S .300 H&H models coming - one to shoot, one to just tuck away just because. Later they became available in a 1B as well. Tempted but held of as I really rather not have more safe queens right now.

I really don't have any safe queens. The last one I had was A Signature Edition Colt 1961 Navy. A beautiful revolver that I just couldn't shoot. I'm a shooter, not a collector but it sure was nice. I sold it to someone who collected them.

Was never a safe queen person until the stainless Bisley models came along. Got at least one of each to tuck away for my son perhaps as a graduation present. Landed a 2-digit Trap Model and a bunch of minty HK's to tuck away for him as well. Guess a yr college is paid for now.
Anyways, just to get you anxious, here's the .300 H&H's:

That made it worse for sure. Those are nice lookers, make no mistake. I wonder if you can mount a peep sight on the No.1, sort of like a Williams or Lyman?

I'd say brass for the 300 H&H would be like finding hens teeth. Of course, it couldn't be any worse than 38-55 brass. HK's are nice. I have a USP 45 Compact and a superb shooter extraordinaire.

Geez!! I just checked Midway for 300 H&H brass...100 for $141!!

I like the NECG sights myself but have never used the Williams or Lyman ones on a #1. The NECG one worked just as I want so I stuck with it and got a couple more.
I knew I'd wanted a .300 H&H so eyes remained open for years before for brass and loaded ammo. Have found good deals in the "used" ammo tables at shops. The stuff ppl turn in with used guns. The smaller specialty sources help too. Look under, over, inside and ask.
The USP was the 1st pistol I purchased, bought it the day the Brady Bill was signed. That one hooked me on the brand. Keeping those eyes open and looking, looking, looking allowed a minty HK4 a couple minty .45 P9s' and a couple P7 series models come to live on the top shelf.

I'll still keep an eye out for the brass so if I find a good source, I'll let ya know.

P7 and P9's? Too rich for my blood. Those cost more than my first few cars. A P13 would be nice.

I did locate some brass a bit cheaper than what Midway offered...Hornady and Nosler. I didn't know Nosler made brass. Brass for about any caliber be it rifle or pistol seems back ordered these days.

Check Graf & Sons, Midsouth Shooters Supply, and Able Ammo for brass. Yeah it's a bit for brass but unless you're really pushing the loads, they'll last.

Those P7's and P9's...right place, right time and just knowing more than the shop selling them helped get them here for well under what they should've been priced at. A couple in the area of 50% under priced.

Might be the case Stateside but not necessarily here.
I had to order my 1A in .270 Win. and wait for it to be shipped across the pond.
NIOA, who are the AU importers here, get a shipment every two months.
Sometimes they get what they want, sometimes what they can.

Graf and Son's are more than Midway at about $160/100. MidSouth is out of stock but their Hornady brass is $105/100. Sinclair is about the cheapest at $85/100 but of course, they're out of stock as well.

Colt Signature Series are beautiful pistols, have 8 of them unfired I think the third generation were made by the same company that made the Henry's under Colt's license. Sold my Ruger #1 50th Ann. 45-70, something I would never shoot plus I have a S.S. #1 in 45-70 with the gray laminated stock that is a great shooter.

The fit and finish on the one I had was absolute perfection. It was for lookin' not shootin'...something I can't get into. Time's too short for me to just be lookin'. I appreciate beauty buy a utility more.

If you are still looking for a peep sight you might want to check out Skinner Sights they make them in blued, brass and stainless. Good luck on finding reasonably priced rifle brass. I had to buy some at auction but was glad to find some.
