If I was to buy a used No. 1 today, what would be considered a fair price? I know the condition of the rifle, the caliber and model are all factors. Let's just say a 45-70, standard model?
I've been reading a lot of the post here, and I noticed that some of you guys have purchased No. 1 really cheap.
Your inputs are greatly appreciated.

Come on, really, over 80 views and no replies. LOL!!!!! OK, I hope someone helps me out here, because I don't want to over pay for the first one I buy.
Thanks!

I'd say $700 and up. I rarely see #1's in any condition that would put them much below that price. can't recall what mine cost exactly but none of my #1's cost over $800, including brand new ones.

Consulting the Blue Book; a used one at 98% should start at about $775 dollars and I've seen new ones going for approximately $1100 when they can be found. I bought one about 3 years ago in 30'06 for right at $1100 dollars.

Anything less than $650 is a very good deal... I would not pay over $800

I am a big fan of the #1.
I went to a gun show today it was small, but I was surprised to see 8 #1s. They ranged in price from $700-1200 depending on caliber & condition. The highest priced one was a really nice one chambered for the 9.3X74R. the cheapest believe it or not was a .375H&H that showed a bit of wear externally. I saw two chambered for the .458 Win. Mag. I did not see one chambered for the .45-70.
These prices are asking prices, & I'd be really surprised if you couldn't get at least $50 knocked off one when you started haggeling & pulled out the green?
Prices may vary quite a bit in your area?

45/70 does seem to raise the price a bit

Cool, thank you gents for you inputs. I've seen them anywhere between $650 (with a little wear & tear) to $1200-$1500. I'll keep looking and be patient, and maybe I'll get a decent deal someday.

I certainly wouldn't be seeing $650 as something besides a decent deal.

You are correct, but on my last comment I meant to say "a little too much wear & tear" on them.

If you find one that shows a bit more wear than others, but not abuse, I'd check the bore. Take a bore light with you any time you are seriously looking at a gun to buy. I wouldn't be afraid to ask the owner if he could run a bore brush & patch through the bore either. This might not be feasable at a gun show, but if the gun is in a shop the owner should be willing to run a brush & patch down the bore. Wipe it after the brush because even a light film of oil can appear to be very smooth & shiny.
I am not sure how much wear you are willing to accept, but some otherwise good rifles have been passed up because of honest wear on the outside.

Frank V. Thanks for the info, that makes perfect sense. I'm looking at a No. 1B for $750.

That sounds like a good price to me. What caliber are you looking at?
Hope that one works out for you.
