I have a modest collection of factory #1s - including a very few rare factory models like a 1B and an AB in 7x57 Mauser and a 7mm 08 in a 1A --- but I get the most pleasure out of custom models that I have found or have had built to my specs and somewhat peculiar tastes.
These include simple rechamber/rebore jobs like 1Bs in .300 H&H, .338-06 and .338 Federal; a 1H in .35 Whelen; and a rebarreled 1V type in 41 mag. Then I have three restocked and rebarreled custom carbines rifles in 7mm BR, 6.5 Swede, and 6.8 SPC II and have a full custom 257 Roberts AI type on the way. I also have had my Lyman Centennial modified with Creedmore-type iron sights.
Most of my full custom rifles have stocks w/o the AH forearm and many have custom scope mounts that bring the scope further back than the factory design permits. ( I am a no-necker and hate to creep the stock to get a full sight picture.) All my #1s of 30-06 and larger caliber have after-market, serious, recoil pads, and three lb triggers.
The 6.8 SPC II is by far the most far-out of my project guns in that it has a synthetic stock and is totally camo-ed.
I'm curious and would like to hear about your custom #1s.

Two of my best custom # 1's are a 22 LR and a 30 BR. Both are a lot of fun to shoot, especially the 22 RF, have used it in more that a few Schuetzen events and it will shoot along with any of the other guns on the line, and when I do what I'm supposed to do it will bring home the Gold.
Same with my 30 BR, this one shoots so good that it gives the bolt action guys a run, and again when I do my part it will also bring home the Gold.
How does your 7 BR shoot ?.

Ruger 1 Guy,
The 7mm Br is better than MOA with factory rounds. I'm sure it would do a lot beter with reloads but I've never had the time.
What models are your 22 LR and 30 BR?

I have what is essentially a 1-V in .17 Remington with a Douglas barrel and a Keplinger trigger.
I also have a No. 3 action that has been re-barreled with a 30 inch large diameter barrel by a custom maker in Montana that is chambered in .40-70 Sharps Straight. It has a spirit level globe front sight, vernier rear sight and No. 1 wood on it. It also has a Canjar trigger.
The .17 shoots reasonably well, but was set up to shoot nothing heavier than 20 grain bullets. I haven't played with the .40-70 enough to tell you how it shoots.
I didn't build either rifle - I bought them already set up the way they are.

wunbe,
Being that they were both built up as shooting range guns they look something like the 1-V models.
Not something anyone would want to carry around all day but they do perform at the range. I use the 22 RF conversion at both 50 yd and 100 yd events, with the right ammo and on a nice day it will hold well under 1/2 inch at 50 and around 3/4 at 100, off a bench of course.
The 30 BR is set up about the same way and both look about the same but it may weigh in a little less because of the bigger hole in the barrel. It will easily shoot under 1/2 inch at 100 yds. with Sierra 125 Gr. or Berger 115 Gr. bullets.
Always wanted a 7 BR in a # 1 but never got around to building one up, don't see any reason that it wouldn't shoot as good or maybe better than a 30 BR with the right bullets. I've never seen a 7 BR shoot as most of the Center Fire events I go to the guys are using the 6 PPC or the 30 BR.
I just may have to build one this winter, never hurts to have more than enough guns to play with.

My # 1's in 22 RF and 30 BR are nothing special they look just like 1-V's, if you seen one you seen them all.

I forgot to mention my full custom 9.3x62 1B in my original post. It has a gorgeous tiger maple stock that, unfortunately, I am too inept with to post picts of here. be gl;ad to send one to your email though.

wunbe,
I took this picture of my five Rugers before I left for a PD shoot in Montana this past June. All are custom to some extent. I bought the .223 No.3 on the left at a gun show back in Feb. and haven't rebarreled it yet. It has had the stock modified with checkering and forend cap and had a Kepplinger set trigger installed. The other four also have Kepplinger set triggers. The No.1 second from the left and the No.3 in the center are chambered in my wildcat .219DW PDK. Its a 30-30 case shortened to 1.900 with a 35 degree shoulder and a .270 long .250 dia neck. The No.1 has a 14" twist Shilen and shoots 55 NBT's at 3625fps and the No.3 has a 8" twist Shilen and shoots 75gr A-Max's at 3200 fps. The No.3 and No.1 on the right are my wildcat .204 Wasp chambering, 30-30 case,1.770 case length, 30 degree shoulder, .250 long .232 dia neck. The No.3 has a 11" twist Pacnor and the No.1 Has a 11" twist Krieger. They both shoot 39gr Blitzkings at 4100 fps. The No.3 has EABCO's French Gray finish on the action and No.1 wood from Reinhart-Fagen.
The No.3's at work on the prairie. The next day after this pic shot, I had my longest hit ever on a PD at 709 yards with the 8" twist .219 shooting the 75gr A-Max. I was up 12.25 MOA from a 200yd zero.
The case on the left is ready to fireform with a 53gr V-Max and the formed case on the right is loaded with a 75gr A-Max. This pic also shows the way that I do my scope bases. The barrel is 1.200 dia for 5 inches so I use two rear #85 Weaver bases and Burris Signature Zee rings.
This is a pic of the .204 Wasp loaded with a 39gr BK.
Might have room for one more pic in this post. I always liked the way this No.1 looked. This No.1 had been rebarreled to .225 Win. when I bought it in 1995, I added the 15X 2" Unertl scope. I shot it about 5000 times at PD's and paper before rebarreling it to .204 Wasp in '09.

Ruger 1 Guy,
I've only owned one, impressive scope. It had very fine crosshairs and a dot that I think was about 1/4 inch. Great for target work but not so much for PD shooting. No reference points on horizontal crosshair for holdoff in the wind and AO was a pain in the butt with having to loosen one ring and tighten the other to slide the front lens. I still used it PD shooting for 9 years and sold it for what I paid for it. Needed the money for a 7BR xp-100 for handgun sihlouette.

219DW,
Are the scope mounts custom or off the shelf items?
I tend to seek out customsolutins that move the mounts back a bit.
Nice to see 'wild-catted' #1s -- particulalry those in use for long range precision shooting. One more proof that the design is not fundamentally flawed in the accuracy arena. It is just the production rifles that casue the headaches.

Dave | Hi Dave,
When I hunted I always just set it at 200 yds and forgot about it, never had any problems. Being that I shoot much more that I hunt now a days I don't mind setting it for the more precise exact distance I'm shooting at.
