Wunbe,
Both bases are Weaver #85, which is listed as the rear base for the No.1 and No.3. I use it for both front and rear because the barrel is 1.200 dia. for 5 inches before starting to taper. The Krieger .20 cal barrel is #18 contour and the Pacnor is Target Weight contour. The Shilen #7 contour barrels come 1.250 dia. for 4" and after the gunsmith turns that down to 1.200 dia., it has about 5" of straight. Here's a couple more pics of the scope mounting. I had this No.3 rebarreled in .219 Wasp back in 1993 with a Shilen #7. I had the scope bases 4.0" apart which puts the front base too far forward. Since then I've had them 3.25" apart. Now I can mount the scopes with the turret almost against the rear ring. That works for me shooting off a bench or prone. After 6000 rounds I had this No.3 rebarreled to .204 Wasp a couple of years ago.

The target on the left was shot back in '94 when the .219 Wasp barrel was fairly new. The load was 29.3gr N135, 50gr NBT. The right target was shot in '08 after almost 6000 rounds. Load was 32.0gr Varget, 55gr V-Max.

Another view of the scope mounting, this is the 14" twist .219DW PDK No.1. I was never happy with the 8-32X50 Pentax, so traded it off and now have a 8-32X40 4200 Bushnell on it.

The group on the right was shot with this No.1. It's the best 5 shot at 100 yards group that I've shot with any of my Rugers. The load was 33.7gr N140 and 50gr NBT. The group on the left is more typical of what it shoots.

Dave

gewehrfreund,
I used it on a couple different rifles on PD's, then relegated it to target work for a while before sending it on down the road. Sold it on the Varmints Den forum to a guy in Nebraska. I sent it to Redfield back in the 90's and they cleaned it for $7 return postage. Always liked the plumb colored blueing. The lack of reference points on the fine crosshairs made it harder to use on the windy prairie than a scope with duplex or mil-dot.

Most of my full custom rifles have stocks w/o the AH forearm and many have custom scope mounts that bring the scope further back than the factory design permits. ( I am a no-necker and hate to creep the stock to get a full sight picture.) All my #1s of 30-06 and larger caliber have after-market, serious, recoil pads, and three lb triggers.
Howdy wunbe. I am also a ‘no necker” as you call it and have never been able to get a scope back far enough to see it properly. And I have never seen a No. 1 with decent wood from the factory. I’ve been told they exist, but they don’t ship those to the south. All I have ever seen, (I have owned eight) had wood that came off of an old pallet. I have never owned one that would shoot better than three inches as it came from the factory. Every trigger on every one I ever had was terrible.

I was getting old, so I just bit the bullet and decided to have a No. 1 built for me the way Bill Ruger should have built it in the beginning. Some pics below: I bought a barreled action from Brownell’s and had the Ruger barrel replaced. I used the Ruger barrel for a tomato stake. The stock blank came from Dakota as a one piece blank AA grade English walnut.

Showing the scope block milled to fit the receiver/barrel joint and that is as far back as it will go. Front block milled to fit tapered octagon barrel.

Showing buttstock/ recoil pad and how far back that rear scope block really is.

Showing forearm w/ schobel and ebony insert and inletted, double screw sling swivels

Showing rifle maker name plate. This is Roger Ferrell who advertises only in RIFLE magazine. His work is often featured in that magazine. He is a member of the American Rifle Makers Guild.

Showing cartridge chambering

Showing the wood grain as if it passed through the receiver. He matched it well which is the reason I bought a one piece blank.

The barrel is a 26 inch Shilen hand lapped, true rust blued and cryo treated after it was made octagonal. It is octagon shaped like Ruger should have done on all the No.1 barrels. The scope mounts are Control and the scope is a Leupold vari-X III 2.5 X 8 with duplex reticule. The ONLY thing on this rifle that came from Ruger is the action. EVERYTHING else is something better than Ruger would have done. This rig has few moving parts and those are stout. It is simple for a reason: not much can go wrong with it. It has been in service for the past 12 years and the finish is beginning to show a little wear, but since at 70 years old mine is too, who cares? The rifle has been on many trips to Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, British Columbia, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia and has taken everything from elk to coyotes and everything in between. A .338 Win. Mag. isn’t exactly a varmint rifle, but it will kill them. In fact, it has killed everything I shot with it graveyard dead and I've never had to look for what I shot because it was dead right where I shot it. You gotta love a .338.

Please forgive the photo's. They were taken with rifle on my loading bench and there is a lot of light reflection. I ain't much of a photographer anyway.

I love what you've done with that.
(I thought the wood on my #1A was pretty good.)

Well thank you sir, but I didn't do that. Roger Ferrell did. But he loves No. 1's and 3's and has several he uses personally, one of which was featured in Rifle magazine. It is a 22 rimfire No. 1! It is cool as hell. I believe you can see it here --> http://www.riflemagazine.com/magazin...20(LO)%202.pdf That site didn't work very well last time I tried it though.

Roger wanted to put a shadow line cheek piece on the butt stock of my rifle for the same price, but I just wanted the comb as high as he could get it and still have a cleaning rod pass across it to clean the barrel from the breech end. It is my main hunting rifle and a joy to use. It will shoot my reloads into 3/4 to one inch groups all day with 250 grain bullets of just about any maker and I have on occasion shot 5/8 inch groups with Noslers when my zigs and zags canceled each other out. That is fine accuracy for a big game rifle and I have never doubted where the bullet will go, or that it will have enough energy to kill when it gets there.

Old Rifle Crank, Wow! What a Ruger No1. I realize that most everything been changed, but your No.1 is one of the classest No.1's I have ever seen. (I have seen a few) I have 3 large safe's full of hunting rifles and would some day like to get down to 3 or 4 rifles like yours for all my hunting. Quality not quanity.

Thanks 405. I once had three safes full also but used only a few, so I gave some to my nephews and sold those they didn't want. I got rid of those I had not used in the last 20 years and then sold or gave away those I had not used in the past 5 years. Am now down to one safe and only those I actually use each year. Should have done that 30 years ago.

Now I'm outta here and taking that No. 1 .338 with me to start hunting season for this year. See you fellas in the boon docks and all the best to you.
