My "DREAM" rifle is----

I have a nostalgic love for the 45-70. Never owned one or shot one but I have carresed them at gun shows, Marlins only. If I had one extra Social Security check this year I would find a #3 action and have it rebarreled with a 36" hexagon barrel and chambered for the 45-70 then, take the stock and have a mercury recoil reducer cylinder put in it. I can make a leather cartridge holder for the stock and hide a recoil pad under it. I would have to shoot this piece of craftsmanship from a rest or shooting sticks ( my one arm just would not be able to hold it up). My guess for cost may be $900.00 or so. This is my dream.

My dream rifle would be a switch barrel rifle either a dakota traveler or a blaser in the same lines. It would be 6.5x55 sw3edish 30-06 and 375 h and h. If I was also going on a world hunt as part of the same dream hey its a dream I would make the same rifle choice but in 30--6 375 h and h and 458 lott. The second choice covers africa and teh rest of the world. I would have a dedicatede scope setup on each barrel asssembly using leupold or schmidt and bendwer for each.

I dream of the BAR..not the current hunting gun, but I would compromise for one of the semi-auto remakes currently produced...plus about 25 mags to feed it !

If you put a 36" octagonal barrel on a No. 3 action you won't need the mercury recoil reducer

Dream rifle ???

Got a Ruger 77 Sporter with the grey laminate stock that is quite a dream !

Sending it away to get it bedded now. the gunsmith is also to change the ugly plastic pistol grip cap with a steel Ruger pistol grip cap. Have removed the shiny factory finish and applied a coat of oil.

the rifle is in 270 Win. Topped with a Swarovski 4 - 12 X 50, 1". A large scope, but some of my hunts are in the middle of the night for Wild Boar, so I need it.
The scope ring chart suggests high rings, but I managed to innstall the scope in medium height rings.

A perfect rifle for vestern Europe hunting : Moose, Red Deer, Roe Deer, Wild Boar, (and a few others.)

four70nitro, I am serious about this build and if the cylinder won't be needed it will save a few bucks. I have not seen a #3 action or gun at one of the gun shows so I may have to buy online. McMillan, I belive, would do the barrel. My guess of $900.00 may be light depending on the cost of the action.

Don't know if you reload but my M77 in 270 shoots to 3/4" with 130 gr Sierra SP over 56 gr of H4831 and a Federal LRP. Good luck.

You'd have to settle for the .416 Barrett instead!

Silly "No 50 caliber rifles" law!
