What caliber should I get? I'm kind of looking for a caliber that someone would own if this was their only rifle in a large caliber. I would want to be able to hunt, target shoot, and I would want a caliber that could work though a SHTF apocalypse scenario. I do not plan on using the single shot rifle for a SHTF scenario but I do want to know what caliber someone would choose for that and I will probably get a No. 1 in such caliber. My initial thinking is .308 but I am wide open to suggestions as my experience with rifles consists of taking 2 shots with my friends AR-15.

If you place your round in the right place there's not to much you cant drop with it and we haven't the predators and dangerous game around that you guys in the States may have to contend with.

What caliber? .30 caliber. As for a cartridge, .308 or .30-06. Only chose those chamberings due to their readily available supply of ammo. For having just a single #1, aside from the whole apocalypse scenario *roll eyes* I'd opt for a .45-70 as it'll pretty much do it all on this continent.

I would go with 30-06. In the 20s or 30s a man named Gancel Fitz took every head of north American big game with a 30-06 and that includes Kodiak bear Grizzly bear and polar bear with bullets that are nowhere near as good as today.

I would choose 308 cal as the ammo's plentiful, good punch at range, will take most game in North America except the grizzly.
For a platform for the 308 look into the Ruger scout rifle for a good SHTF weapon or the M77 for hunting.
Good luck and have fun shooting!

Don't have a No.1 but if I did I would want either an extremely fast varmint round, .270 Win, .30-06, or .45-70. Varmint round would be fun to shoot the other 3 are great big game cartridges and pretty easy to find anywhere.
