Thats interesting. I don't own one but I would not have guessed 45-70. I would have guessed 30/06 or 270 for no particular reason but never the old 45-70. A great old caliber still going strong.

WOW OH WOW, that is a great list of great Guns!!!!!
I like !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! johnyakima The only comment I'd make about your last post is ---------- while the current Hornady cup-n-core bullets (not talking bonded here) are far and away better then those of many years back, when putting the "7s" against an elk, better bullets are an advantage.
Even with their higher cost per bullet, increased bullet cost is still one of the cheaper parts of any hunt.
I have as yet, not tried the different bonded bullets available, but many years back shot and hunted with my first Nosler Partitions after a Hornady bullet failed/came apart when taking a mule deer with my .243.
I still have the empty jacket from that hunt back in the 60s.
I like Hornady products, and the interlock is a MUCH better bullet then those old products, but in trueth, you'll never be sorry if your using something of the quality level of the partitions when hunting for game animals.
I know that many, MANY folk use many cup-n-core designs and do so with great results, it is just that when push comes to shove and the shots or hits get tough/bad that extra quality just may pull your fat out of the fire.
Especially when or if the caliber/cartridge is slightly on the light side.
Keep em coming!

Wigenhead,
See by your number of posts, that you are newer or at least less posted here on the forum.
Not sure if you have thought of or tried the cast boolit/bullet route, but now having 2 elk and 3 deer posted to the account on my #1S - 45/70, I can sum it up in one word. AWESOME!!!!!!!
Now, if you go to the Cast Boolit Forum, or the Marlin Owners Forum, you can find lots to posts that refer to loading the 45/70, "mild to wild."
Yep, understand you have the .458 Win Mag., but little difference in the two cartridges should allow your rifle to be loaded in a like fashion.
End result, the 458 is suddenly much more shootable and fun.
Plus, with the proper Wide Flat Nose (WFN) cast boolit in the range of 1500 - 1700fps and 400+ grains in weight is a game taking machine.
Keep em coming!

My only #1 is also a 45/70. It is a good shooter and able to get around 2 inch five shot groups at one hundred yards with 300 grain hp. At one hundred yards with five of these .45/70 rounds most bullet holes are touching each other. I have gotten many woodchucks with this rifle also used the same round for deer hunting.
My Ruger Centerfire Rifles
#1-45/70
Model 77-250 Savage
#3-.22 Hornet
Model 77/44-.44 Magnum
Mini 14 .223 Tactical GB
I am now thinking of getting a Ruger Model 77 Hawkeye compact in .223, does anyone have one to review?

Hans13,
Maybe a bit costlier then some others we could talk about, and some of those less costly single shots ring some peoples bells. Great.
However, you many times get what you pay for and not only is the class, looks and quality much higher then in some other cases, but no one talks about a #1 opening by itself if the load happens to be a bit stiff.
There are many people who enjoy the cheaper firearms, but if I happen to be checking out the racks at the local gun shop and a cheapy is sitting along side a RUGER #1, I'll bite the bullet and save for awhile to buy better.
There is truely pride in ownership, and nothing like sitting in the woods and enjoying the beauty and feel of a fine rifle in your hands.
Great that we are still able to have and make such choices!

#1S 45/70
2012 model - still looking for the "Sweet Spot" load.
1st time out was sighting in on with a 405 grain Oregon Lazer Cast load at advertised 1400 fps, stopped hitting my target at 100 yd after 15 rounds. No barrell leading - got home and discovered I shot the mounts loose in spite of being installed at 25 IP torque. Re-tightened and will try again this weekend. Is this common? Do I need to locktite the Ruger monts at the receiver?
