I've been thinking about getting a No. 1-A in a .300 RCM couple of years. But what has held me back is the staying power of the .300 RCM cartridge.

Will the .300 RCM be around 5 or 10 years from now?

That is a question which is getting batted around.

Don't know the answer.

But considering the #1 is available in the 300win mag and I believe the 300 Weatherby, I'd personaly go that directions.

Both of those WILL out do the 300RCM or WSM and WILL be around for a long long time.

If it is a recoil facter, reduced loads for practice are the way to go.

The few shots you'll take at game will never be felt, and a sand bag between you and the butt diring preseason sighting in will take care of that problem.

Keep em coming!

I seriously doubt it unless someone chambers a black-ops gun for it.

There is no advantage to short rounds in a single shot

Who cares if it stays around, just load up on brass now, and you won't need to worry about it. I did the same for a 300 RSAUM, a cartridge that died an early death, but I got more brass than I can use in my lifetime so no worries about its lack of success. I like the 300 RCM in the #1 RSI currently in the catalog.

Reload and it'll be around as long as you need it to be.

You mean you think I should buy it just because I think it’s a cool cartridge? Even though the Ruger #1 is better suited for the 22/.50BMR??

I've been towing with the same issue, over RCM brass/ammo availability in the near, and distant future. I would love a short, fast handling No. 1A in .300 RCM, and have been looking at the No. 1S in .338 RCM as well. These rifles are so much shorter than a bolt gun in the same caliber and barrel length, they'd be awesome in the brush.

I have to agree with Amigo Will. A #1 with 22 or 24" tube is the same length with a .22 Hornet or a .375 H&H. What is the point of the RCM? Cp

Dave, I am an Ol'Coot, so take it for what it is worth.

However, you will be able to get 300mag, 300 Weatherby, 300 H&H brass for many years to come, or at least as long as we can buy components.

But the jury is still out on the short mags. I think the Winchester will out last the Remington offerings, as you just read or see a lot more about them.

But as said, the jury is still out and there have been many rounds better then these that have faded to almost nothing, the 284win, for example.

If you can get the 300 Weatherby or better yet the 300 H&H brass, you can make the 300 winchester, 300 Weatherby and 338 brass, as well as a bunch more, while the short mags rounds would be MUCH harder to find or make.

Any hype you read about the short mags being better then the older rounds is just that, hype.

Not saying the short mags are not good rounds, just that the older rounds will do anything the new ones will do, and many times a fair amount more.

We have a bunch of nice new rounds available from Winchester, Remington, RUGER/Hornady etc., and in fact maybe too many, so it will be awhile before they all shake out to see what remains.

Buy a 300win mag or 338 win mag and be assured of brass availability for many years to come.

Keep em coming!

Greetings,

I am surpised that not one person recommended the 30-06. It is just, as good as, the short mag, and a whole lot cheaper to shoot. The average deer or other varmint will not notice the difference.

Yep Moondog, the "06" is a very good one, it just isn't the direction the O.P. was taking in his post, so that probably explains why the subject didn't come up.

Keep em coming!
