If you are paying that much for a #1 , $3.50 a pop should be easy. Look at some rounds like 460 wby or 400x450

Our Aussie gun dollar conversion finds a stock new 77/22 is almost a grand. This No1 is a good price for us. The scope alones 2nd hand $5-600. But I asked about 300win mag starts $67bucks for 20 rounds. Its kinda out of my league as still learnin how to handle my .22 and never owned a center fire. I have been chasin a 223 that will suit me and my young son but this popped up and I always liked Rugers No1 elegant looks.
Sigh, wont happen not for a few years need to learn handling & reloadin work my way up, just had to share.

The answer is reloading your own ammunition.

There's enough out there so passing up one isn't a big deal. Get the fundamentals down with that .22 and then progress to a .223 before making the jump. Just to make ya feel a bit better, $3.50/each isn't horrible. There's others MUCH more costly to shoot.

2296mag . . .
You made the right call.
It's a beautiful rifle with good glass. But probably not the most versatile rig in the world, and probably not a good choice for your first centerfire.
Glad you posted it, though. I have Ruger No.1 dreams myself from time to time!

I love my .300 Win Mag, but I do not have to pay $3.50 per shot. Can you reload "down under"??

We can, I don't as yet but keen to learn in time. I'll ask another Ozzie who does what various cal reloads can $ cost v shop price down here.
Aww I seen the rifles still 4 sale. I am really not ready for this step up & need to wait for my son to grow into that size. Hmm perhaps an early 18th bday gift to set aside in the gun safe.

You'd get it well under $3.80 a shot.
I worked out 22-250 to be around 48c a shot if using second hand brass and $1.20 if buying a bag of 100 Remington unprimed cases. That goes down to 48c on the second reload.
Work out exactly what your going to use
Projectile brand, type and grain
Powder price per load (16 cents for me)
Primers
Brass per 100 if buying new. Dont worry about it if using once fired brass.
Its pretty easy to work out the powder
You get a price on say half a KG and then convert from 500 grams into grains.
AR2213SC = $35 per 0.5kg
= $35 per 7716.168 grains
We'll say your using 60 grains per load
Thats 128 loads per 500 grams of powder
= 27c per load
30 Cal 110 grain V-Max by Hornady (100) = $44
44c per projectile
roughly 5c a primer
Remington Brass 300 Winchester Magnum Box of 100 = $111.98
= $1.12 per case
ALL UP = $1.88 per round give or take depending what brands you use and thats with new brass
76c if you use second hand brass after firing your so called $3.80 factory loads
Hope this helps

I bought a Lee Breech Lock Challenger Kit and dies for 22-250 for well under $300.
Its all you need to start off.
you'll slowly add to it with little case prep and measuring tools and the such that will all add u over time but its worth it

Jump in and get to reloading. I have been putting it off for years, and I am finally going to take the plunge after hunting season is done.
