Tropical in 45-70

Does anyone have any information on #1 H in 45-70. Supposedly a limited edition. It has a mannlicher stock and was only made in 1976. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There are about 12-20 in existence, but none of them had a mannlicher stock. They were all typical 1H configuration; 24" D-weight barrel with Alex Henry fore-end.
All were made in 1976 as far as I've ever heard. There is information on them in the Clayton No. 1 book.

I read about the 1H with the 24" barrel in Clayton's book. This one has a Mannlicher stock. The owner said it was a limited run and I was wondering if anyone knows how many were made or if anyone owns one.

I'd say the owner is mistaken. Actual data and pictures might prove me wrong, but I doubt it.

I've, personally, seen two

First was about twenty years ago in a small shop I frequented in Annandale, VA, The Loading Bench. I told Dale, the owner it was a shame Ruger didn't make the .45-70 in Heavy Tropical. He said follow me. We went to the back room and he had one in a case. His father had been in the Ruger Gun Collectors. Might have been a one-time president. The story I got was a Ruger employee was supposed to be chambering .458's and mistakenly picked up the wrong reamer, getting through several barrels before realizing his error. Asking what to do with the barrels, he was told to finish them. Supposedly these were offered to the collectors. The second gun was being sold by one of my club members a couple years ago, complete with a Ruger book which pictured it. Just didn't quite have $2600 on me at the time. Believe me, I woulda if I coulda.

After talking with Gewerfreund and looking at the rifle, I think it was a 1976 1S and had the stock and forearm made and fitted to the rifle. Whoever did the work was a master craftsman because the rifle is perfect from what I see. If it is a custom rifle put out by Ruger they should have made more of them. I'm going to call Ruger with the serial number and see what they can tell me.
