What do you think?

There's a great looking No. 1 in 22-250 over at gunbroker.com that is showing it's age, but has incredible wood. There is evidence of some surface corrosion in a couple places on the metal, but all in all it looks great.. Right now, as I write this, the rifle is going for $650.00 with less than 24 hours left on the auction. Check it out at the link and tell me what you folks think.

Rough..... I would think, if you want a "builder" it might be a good place to start. I guess a good smith could clean up the rust on the receiver but that bunch on the rear right hand side looks like it could be deep. That being said, there are smiths out there that can work wonders with tig/mig machines......

As to the wood, the most severe is the missing chunk at the rear of the fore arm. That could be fixed or left as is if this is going to be a rough shooter.

I am actually looking for a #1 to build on so all I need is an action really but I am not likely to go after this one. I remember when you could buy just a #1 action> I think it was Brownells back in the day.

I think the "buy it now" price is way to high for condition. It will be interesting to see where the bid price ends up.

Just my thoughts.......

You couldn't begin to pour enuf money into that to fix all of the sin! What a sow's ear of a #1.

You would be way ahead of the game paying 1000-1200 for a decent rifle to begin with.

Just my 2 cents.....

Wow.... Nice entrance with your first post.

There are some people who would love to have a No. 1 who just can't afford 1-2 grand. This one can be had for quite a bit less and has potential. With a little time and patience could be turned into something special.

My apologies, Lonnie.

I didn't realize this forum was only for people who live on fantasy island.

The rifle in the ad you posted is a "Salt Wood" Ruger and there is no cure on planet earth for this. The wood stock could be used to heat your house. So a replacement buttstock and forearm will only cost you 500-600.00 if you can find them. To have the metal parts repaired and reblued will only cost you maybe another 500-600.00. So now you are only into this rifle maybe 1800-2000.00. What a deal!

Meanwhile there are seven other 22-250 #1 Rugers on GB today for a thousand or less. And they are gorgeous in comparison without missing chunks of wood and corrosion that goes to the heart of this rifle.

So I will repeat myself, the rifle in your ad is an absolute turd!

It has certainly been well used, not well loved.

Good luck to the buyer at $650,

I think $500 would have been a more realistic price/worth but then again its only worth what someone would pay for it, and someone paid 650.

I feel if you are already at 650 then a no.1 means something to you, might as well add 400 more and look for one with better condition.

Well.... that thing sold for $950.00.

Sorry, but that is a ridiculous price for that gun. I really feel this market has gone a bit nuts.

Just my humble opinion.

Agreed. I feel lucky to have purchased mine while the prices were still somewhat reasonable. I just picked up a 1V in .223 Rem for just a hair over $800. I can't wait until I get the call from my LGS that it is in!
