Hello fellow Ruger-Heads!!! I'm new around here, just found your site the other day. Very cool!! Just bought a new Model 1-B, .270 Win. (26"). Haven't shot it yet. Do any of you know what the .270 with 26" barrel likes for ammo in terms of manufacturer and bullet weight? I don't reload, never seems to be time. Also, with the factory rings, will a 50 mil scope fit above the barrel? Thanks in advance for any responses. Again, nice site!! |

WELCOME! Can't help with the ammo but regarding the rings... the rings shipped with the gun will accommodate a 42mm objective. Call Ruger and explain and they'll allow you to exchange them for the higher set. You'll need 90271 rings I believe. Careful with those #1's...they start multiplying. |

Hi, Model 1. I'm new here, too. Had a 1-B in .270. Too accurate, lol. Used Federal 130 gr. ballistic tips. Very explosive in the animal! Great gun. No.1's are addictive. Eyeing a 1-H in .405. Just got a No. 3 in .22 Hornet (200th Anniv. - near mint). Love them. Paladin43

Thanks for the response. My Savage .270 really likes 130's so I have plenty of them to try out. Some guns like the heavier bullets. Did you get rid of your 1-B .270? | |

My new #1 is in!! Haven't seen it yet, still at the shop. I'm having them get me a new Leupold V-3 3-1/2 X 10 and set it up. My guy at the shop says it has very nice wood (they're a custom stock shop so I'm in hopes the opinion is good). He said if he rated it, he would call it "semi-fancy", what ever that means to anyone. Very dark with quite a bit of character so he says. He used some other term for the look of the grain, can't remember what the term was (getting old sucks). But, I'm psyched. Should be able to pick it up by Friday. Woohoo!!!! I love new guns!

Model 1, sadly I did get rid of it. Wish I had it back. Maybe I'll get another soon. As, I mentioned, right now I'm eyeing a .405-HS (?), w/laminated stock. Just like those long straight cases. Of course, a .45-70 is a thought, as is a 9.3 X 74. The 9.3 is a really cool cartridge. I have a .30-06, that's not a No. 1, It's a bolt action, and has been my bread and butter deer gun, so I've held off in getting a .270, though for long range shooting, it's hard to beat the No. 1-B in .270. It's a great combo. Enjoy it. Right now, my new toy is the No. 3 (Bicentennial Liberty model-near mint) in .22 Hornet. Just got it a couple of weeks ago. With my 66 year old eyes, it cries for a scope. Was going to get a Nikon Monarch 3-12 side focus, but it's too big for that gun (looks awkward), and only adjusts parallax down to 50 yds., so I settled on a Leupold ultralight 3-9 with adjustable objective. Need to focus it down to 25 yds., and out to about 200. It seems to be the only quality scope that focuses down that close. Should have the scope by this weekend. Then the fun really starts. If accurate out of the box, great - leave it alone. If not, reloading time. We'll see. Back to your 1-B. Barrel and weight is just right. Very nice scope and power range. A nicely balanced gun. And, with pretty wood, definitely a keeper. Wish you many years of happy hunting with it. Don't get rid of it! They are gems.

I just bought a 1-B in .270 as well. This one was NIB and was made in 1976 with the inscription on the barrel. I'm not sure if it adds anything to the value or not. It also has the most figure of any Ruger stock that I have ever seen. I plan on mounting a VXII Leupold 3X9X40 on it and shooting it on the range at first. I'm not sure I will ever be able to take this gun into a tree stand. I'm already thinking about buying another one. This time it has to be a tropical. |

I was considering selling off my Savage .270 to offset the price of the #1. But, I just couldn't do it. That Savage really does shoot well and the AccuTrigger is super nice, plus, that Savage can be my foul weather beater. So, I bit the bullet and dropped the cash and saved my Savage too. Glad I did. I have several others that I hardly ever shoot but they look nice in the case!! |

After trying several different powder and bullet combos, I finally found that RL-22 and the 130g Hornady GMX did this: .540" ![]() Try finding some factory loads with the GMX, my .270 really likes this bullet. |
